115 DMU

A countryside walk from Beaconsfield to Amersham took me over the Aylesbury to London line via a footbridge at Little Missenden on the 31st July 1985. There I photographed Class 115 51886 (leading) + 59728 + 59762 + 51887 on a service for Marylebone. It is pictured approaching from the west. S Gaskell.

103 DMU

A Class 103 DMU at Holyhead on 23/08/1978. The Class 103s had a career spanning some 25 years, which is surprising considering they were considered non-standard in terms of their bodywork construction, which gave trouble in later years. They tended to be concentrated on services along the border counties between England and Wales, as well as Wales. Graeme Phillips Collection.

116 DMU

Two suburban sets - the first Class 116 T339 (presumably 53863 + 59670 + 53850) - at Prestatyn on 27/03/1989 with a service heading for Llandudno. Graeme Phillips Collection.

101 DMU

A Class 101 at York on 05/08/1977. The car nearest the camera appears to be E56073, exhibiting the DMU Refurbished livery of white with blue band - within the blue band is the logo of West Yorkshire PTE, later MetroTrain. At the time it was based at Neville Hill (Leeds), two months later it would be transferred to Cambridge. Graeme Phillips Collection.

103 DMU

A Class 103 DMU (with possibly at 108 behind) at Crewe in August 1977, seen awaiting departure with a service for Chester. Graeme Phillips Collection.

E52079 stands in what was then platform 8 of York station with a service for Huddersfield, Friday 25/07/86. Graeme Phillips Collection.

114 DMU

A Class 114 at Lincoln Central. This fleet of 49 power + trailer 2-car units was for many years allocated to Lincoln (LN) depot for medium-distance services across a wide area of eastern England, extending deep into Yorkshire and down to destinations such as Peterborough. Along with the Derby (DY) based Class 120s - which worked many Cross-Country routes across central England - they were largely replaced from the mid-1980s by Class 150/1 Sprinters. This shot illustrates the white and blue DMU Refurbished livery which was applied between 1975 and 1979. This image will have been taken in the late 1970s (though early 1980s is possible). Graeme Phillips Collection.

108 DMU

A Class 108 at Blaenau Ffestiniog in October 1979. Graeme Phillips Collection.

101 DMU

A five-car formation of Met-Camm vehicles departs westbound from York with a service for Bradford Interchange in the mid/late 1980s. The leading vehicle - 53151 - still carries its East Anglian set number 97. It had been transferred from Norwich to HT in May 1985, then to NL in the first half of May 1986. Graeme Phillips Collection.

101 DMU

Class 101s (and 108) at Haltwhistle, early-mid 1970s. As the destination blinds show, nearest the camera is a Tyne Valley line service from Newcastle to Carlisle (101 / 108), and the other (behind) is for Alston. The branch line from Haltwhistle to Alston, which operated as a long siding with no signals, closed on 3rd May 1976. Graeme Phillips Collection.

119 DMU

An unusual sight of a Class 119 at Battersby, North Yorkshire, on the rural Esk Valley line between Middlesbrough and Whitby. Taken on on the 09/10/1987, closest is 51058, the car furthest from the camera is a suburban type, either Class 116 or 118. Graeme Phillips Collection.

derby-lightweight DMU

An original 79xxx Derby Lightweight set at Birkby Drifts Pit, Cumbria on 27/07/1968, with a service heading for Whitehaven. These early DMUs were nearing the end of their operational lives at this time, with the final examples being withdrawn in 1969. In spite of this, many received rail blue livery. Graeme Phillips Collection.

104 DMU

Seen at Oban on 11/08/1986, 104325 consisted of vehicles SC53424 + SC53434 and was painted in this so-called "Mexican Bean" livery of maroon and white for use on the Oban - Crianlarich summer shuttle services. It was often attached to the rear of a loco-hauled service to be taken back to its home depot of Eastfield (ED), Glasgow, for servicing / refueling. Note the white West Highland Terrier symbol on the bodyside, representing the said depot. Graeme Phillips Collection.

110 DMU

E51812 + E59697 + E51842 seen in York station on Saturday 25/07/1986, with another Class 110 on the left. They are in what was then platforms 10 / 11, these bays became platforms 6 / 7 and generally used for services on the direct route to Leeds and beyond, e.g. to Bradford Interchange and on to Manchester Victoria or Blackpool via Calder Valley route. Some InterCity services terminating at York also use these platforms. Graeme Phillips Collection.

101 DMU

The Class 101 is the 16:45 Newcastle - Darlington (which may have run via the coast), seen at Newcastle station on the 30th October 1985. Graeme Phillips Collection.
