Returning to its old stamping ground, a Class 108 two-car DMU formed of DTSL 54270 & DMBS 53987 was passing Lodge Lane Crossing as it topped the gradient from Farington Curve Junction whilst working a lunchtime Preston to Ormskirk service on January 5th 1988. The former Moss Lane Junction which once enabled trains to run direct from East Lancashire to Ormskirk and Liverpool without running via Preston, is visible to the right of the 108. In the foreground is the part dismantled former Up Line that was taken out of use in 1983. In the 1970's and up to the early 1980's, Class 108's were regular performers on the Ormskirk Line, and then made sporadic appearances following ongoing issues with the then almost new Class 142 Pacer fleet. On a fine Summer evening, a two-car Class 104 DMU formed of Driving Motor Brake Second M53470 and Driving Motor Second Lavatory M53499, was hurrying along the Up Fast at Factory Lane, Penwortham, just South of Preston on July 6th 1987. The DMU appears to be well-filled, and the destination blind is showing Crewe. It may have been a returning special/charter from Blackpool North. Martyn Hilbert.
An Allerton Depot three-car Class 115 Suburban DMU, with Driving Motor Brake Second M51854 leading, was passing Cemetery Road at Wigan whilst working a Wigan North Western to Liverpool Lime Street service on January 3rd 1987. There was a small batch of these units allocated to Allerton, they were primarily used on the Cheshire Lines route between Liverpool and Manchester. Martyn Hilbert.
Complete with a discoloured white cab roof, two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU, formed of Driving Motor Brake Second M53431 & Driving Motor Lavatory Second M53512 was stabled between duties in Croft Street Sidings adjacent to Preston Power Box on May 3rd 1987. The well-worn unit was having an extended period of operation due to the sidelining of the then ailing almost new Class 142 Pacer fleet. The unit would become a spare set at Chester Depot in November 1989 due its poor condition until it was officially withdrawn in June 1990, as new Class 150/2 Sprinters began to appear in quantity from BREL York. With the former Jubilee Mill as a backdrop, A Class 104 two-car DMU formed of cars M53425 & M53476 was departing from Croston with the 18.04 Ormskirk to Preston service on September 4th 1987. Martyn Hilbert.
Seeing out its last days working from Longsight Depot as set LO253, and working mainly on local services from Manchester Piccadilly, Class 108 cars M54275 & M51421 were awaiting departure from platform 1 at Piccadilly with a service to New Mills Central on February 28th 1992. They (and other life-expired first generation units), were kept in service due to the then ongoing problems with the Class 142 Pacer fleet. Martyn Hilbert.
In a then everyday scene, with rolling stock that now is no longer in service, this was the view from the footbridge at Manchester Piccadilly on February 28th 1992 before the station roof was given a refurbishment. Regional Railways liveried Class 305 305507 was awaiting departure with a service to Glossop and Hadfield, while in platform 1 was a two-car Class 108 formed of cars M54275 & M51421 (LO253), on a service to New Mills Central. Following a heavy rain shower, a two-car Class 108 DMU with Driving Trailer Second Lavatory (DTSL) car M54214 at the rear was stood at the north end of platform 5 at Preston on June 30th 1990. The DMBS is presumably 53927. The DMU had arrived from Barrow-In-Furness and after the passengers alighted, was working the short distance ECS to the sidings at Croft Street, adjacent to Preston Power Box. Martyn Hilbert.
With peeling paint and corrosion erupting around the cab windows, a well-worn looking Class 104 Driving Motor Brake Second M53451 was coupled to Driving Open Second Lavatory M53518, stood at a run-down Squires Gate with a Blackpool South to Colne service on October 15th 1988. The Coast Line from Blackpool South to Kirkham had fallen on hard times, with just a single track remaining on this once busy route that in the days gone by, buzzed with activity. Despite being close to the Pontins Holiday Camp and Blackpool Airport, the facilities at Squires Gate had been reduced to a bare platform. A far-cry from the days when there were even Camping Coaches located here. The 104 was into its last period of extended operation due to ongoing problems with the Class 142 Pacer fleet.
