104 DMU

A view looking East at a basic Colne station, terminus of the East Lancashire line from Preston on August 5th 1979. A two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M50498 & M50446 was preparing to return to Preston. Colne once had a three platform station, a large goods yard with a warehouse, coal sidings and a carriage shed. The fortunes of this once busy location declined when the route from Colne to Skipton was closed in 1970. Worse was to come when 'economies' saw the line towards Preston singled to Chaffers Siding just East of Nelson. Colne station became unstaffed in 1971 and the demolition of all the remaining railway structures followed swiftly, leaving the bus shelter mediocrity seen in this view. Over 40 years on, the line is still single track, the station has been tided-up, but is still unstaffed. As for the route to Skipton, which if reinstated would become a useful trans-pennine link, it remains just a 'maybe one day'. Martyn Hilbert.

Looking rather sorry for its self with the driving end sheeted over, Class 104 Driving Motor Second Lavatory M53482 was awaiting its fate in one of the sidings at Dock Street, adjacent to the BR Preston Divisional office block (Ladywell House) on January 24th 1986. M53482 had been paired with car M53433, and on the 18th January 1986 the DMU was involved in a head-on collision at Preston, when on a returning football excursion from Carlisle to Accrington, the unit suffered brake failure and collided with Class 47 47111. No one was killed, but 44 passengers were injured. The car lanquished at Preston for some considerable time awaiting the outcome of the subsequent enquiry into the incident, and was later scrapped where it stood. Martyn Hilbert.

Seeing out its final stint of operation before withdrawal, and having an extended life due to errant Class 142's, a Longsight allocated Derby Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars M53987 & M54270 (LO290), was climbing Farington Curve with the 08.31 Preston to Colne service on August 29th 1992. The DMBS M53987 was officially stored in December 1992 and finally withdrawn in January 1993. The trailer M54270 went on to be paired with a Class 101 DMBS (M53291) and was not withdrawn until June 1993. Following withdrawal, both M53987 & M54270 passed into preservation. M51595 was gutted by a fire at Bedford carriage sidings on April 1st 1983 that also destroyed M51614, the fire was thought to have been started by a discarded cigarette end. Martyn Hilbert.

Only two of these vehicles are known to have had the cab doors painted yellow - NE51960 which had the blue squares inside the lamp brackets, and NE51963 which had the blue squares outside - so this should be the latter, unless there were more than two?
