Just got back from 'nam... With apologies to the comic Ted Chippington for the caption... Cardiff set C821 (W51513 + W59050 + W51509) sits at Swindon in November 1987 between trips to Stroud and Cheltenham. Murray Liston.
Misty Met-Camm. A Met Camm power twin set is seen across the reservoirs at Walthamstow on the Gospel Oak to Barking line in October 1987, with the distinctive shape of Forest Road pumping station behind it. Murray Liston.
Running round then Barking. Class 117 unit L429 (51409 + 59519 + 51367) has arrived at Gospel Oak in 1987 where the crew will swap ends and return over the GOBLIN line to Barking. Murray Liston.
Sunshine and Shadows at the west end of Edinburgh Waverley in August 1987. In the distance a family admire the Scotrail class 47 about to take them on an Aberdeen service, while next to us in the unique double sided platform 18 is a Trans Clyde liveried Derby class 107 waiting to leave on a service for Cardenden. Murray Liston.
Where trams now trundle. These are the DMU stabling sidings at Haymarket depot, put in place during 1972 when Leith Central depot closed. This view is from August 1987 with a solitary class 150 Sprinter amongst a sea of almost all Met Camm class 101s. These sidings are now used for storing short HST sets and the Edinburgh Tram lines to the Airport now cross Russell Road just where the picture was taken from. Murray Liston.
The train now arriving at Platform 4...is for Glasgow Central via Shotts. Class 107 set 443 is seen arriving at Haymarket in August 1987. SC52004 is leading, SC59805 is the centre car, and normally SC52016 would be bringing up the rear, but we can just make out a Strathclyde orange and black livery on the last vehicle so presumably a temporary substitution has been made. Murray Liston.
Still retaining West Midlands PTE branding on the outer end of the driving car, a Class 116/101 three-car hybrid DMU formed of cars M53872, M59528 & M53862 formed as Newton Heath allocated set N362, was awaiting departure from the staggered platform layout at Hoscar in West Lancashire with a Southport to Manchester Victoria service on May 14th 1988. The set was disbanded soon after this image was recorded, 53872 was withdrawn in June 1988, 59528 lasted in service until July 1988 whilst 53862 survived until October 1988. All three cars were subsequently scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.
At 8.28pm towards the end of a fine Summer evening with the sun setting in the West, an eight-car DMU forming a Carlisle to Preston 'Dalesrail' service was stood at Bamber Bridge on August 7th 1988. Both cars were withdrawn in 1989 and subsequently scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.
A three-car Class 101/110 Hybrid DMU formed of Class 101 Driving Cars M51808 & M51799 with a former Calder Valley Class 110 Centre Trailer Car, M59694, had just passed through Kirkham North Junction with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on September 3rd 1988. This was the period when due to ongoing problems with the Class 142 fleet, various combinations of surviving First Generation DMU's were cobbled together to keep services running. Martyn Hilbert.
Ex Class 127 Parcels/Newspaper DMU formed of cars M55970 + M55980 (910) was stabled between duties at Croft Street Sidings at Preston on March 23rd 1986. Eleven of these two-car DMU's fitted with roller shutter doors had been converted from former Bedford - St Pancras Class 127 Driving Cars in 1985. They were all withdrawn in 1989. Martyn Hilbert.

DMUs in Bristol Marsh Junction Depot circa late 1950s. A Derby suburban set is on the left formed as a two-car, centre is a Swindon Cross-Country, also formed as a two-car. W50741 is probably the DMBC as image 27151 was likely taken on the same visit from the opposite side. The whiskers on the set on the right identify it as a GRC&W vehicle, the angled fittings where the vacuum pipes come through the buffer beam seem to have been used on some of the Cross-Country sets. John Horne Collection.
Two Derby Heavyweight triple sets arrive into Glasgow Central circa late 1960s. The closest car is still on green, the others in the formation all seem to be in Rail Blue. John Horne Collection.
A Swindon Cross-Country Class 120 DMU with Plymouth on the destination blind at St. Austell, date unknown - circa late 1960s / early 1970s. John Horne Collection.
