Class 108 DMU set CH380 (53634 and presumably 51947) arrives into Manchester Piccadilly. The slide process date was June 1989. A recent transfer from Buxton (where it was BX380) to Chester, it still retains the Spa Line sticker and (very dirty) Buxton white roof, but the black mask it had around the cab windows is gone. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 101 DMU set L842 (53327 and presumably 59110 + 53314) at Oxford circa 1992. Note the two small windows with horizontal bars on the DMCL - presumably luggage space, and the painted window frames on the DMBS. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 101 two-car set C801 - presumably 51517 + 51446 - at Hopton Heath, sometime in 1982. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Leaving for Larbert. Derby class 107 set 425 is seen rasping away from Stirling with an Edinburgh bound service in March 1988, with a Met Camm 101 in the background. This set (SC52028 + SC59797 + SC51985) continued in service for another couple of years before being converted to a departmental Sandite set for a final year before withdrawal. Murray Liston.
Low point at High Shields. High Shields station seen in 1981 shortly before closure of the South Shields branch prior to takeover by the Tyne & Wear Metro. This section of line was abandoned in favour of a more southerly NCB track formation used by the Metro today. Murray Liston.
On 12th July 1980 the “Forth Valley Wanderer” railtour visited a number of lines in Edinburgh, Grangemouth and Fife. A photo stop at the original Alloa station in the afternoon shows the unusual dmu formation a class 101 Met Camm centre car 59047 sandwiched by two of the few class 105 Cravens units to receive blue / grey livery, 51474 and 51480. Murray Liston.
On 12th July 1980 the “Forth Valley Wanderer” railtour visited the Granton branch in Edinburgh. This view shows the train approaching the tunnel under East Trinity Road, with Trinity Junction immediately afterwards. The original line to Scotland St, and thence by cable haulage through the tunnel to the current Waverley station, continues straight ahead. The line was taken up in the mid 1980s and now forms a footpath. Murray Liston.
On 12th July 1980 the “Forth Valley Wanderer” railtour visited the Granton branch in Edinburgh, seen here approaching Trinity station, which was closed as far back as 1925 and remains open as a private house. The North British Railway fixed distant signal was in place here until the line here was dismantled in 1986. The DMU used was formed of two blue/grey Class 105 DMBSs and a 101 centre car, 51474 + 59047 + 51480. Murray Liston.
Dunfermline DMU departure. On a dull day in March 1988, Haymarket's set 305 (51227 + 59045 + 53264) is seen departing Dunfermline Lower with a train for Cowdenbeath. Less than 2 months later the centre car was withdrawn and the power cars reallocated to Newton Heath. Murray Liston.
Contrast and Chat at Cleethorpes. Contrasting DMU fronts (Met-Camm and Derby) at Cleethorpes in late 1987, still with lit oil lamps behind the buffers. Murray Liston.
Not to be confused with Newquay. A 3 car BRCW DMU stops for nobody at New Clee station in the winter of late 1987. The centre car is a Class 108 TBSL. There were only six of these built, at this time one was withdrawn, two were on the ScR and the other three at Neville Hill. Two are recorded as running in Class 110 sets, and this formation is believed to be 51818 + 59246 + 52077. This halt between Cleethorpes and Grimsby was singled in 1985 and the remaining platform is now a request halt for the two-hourly Cleethorpes to Barton-upon-Humber service. Grimsby Town FC's Blundell Park stadium can be seen in the background. Murray Liston.
Staggering on... A BRCW twin set on a Cleethorpes to Barton-upon-Humber working (despite the destination blind) passes the station building at Habrough and readies for the stop at the westbound platform located behind me on the other side of the level crossing. Taken on a misty wintry day in late 1987. The station building has since been demolished, as was the signalbox where I took this photo from. Murray Liston.
Habrough Crossing. Taken in the winter of late 1987, we see a BRCW twin DMU stopping at Habrough on a service from Barton-upon-Humber to Cleethorpes. Sadly almost everything in this photo has now gone - station buildings, the GCR signalbox and gates, the DMU, the footbridge I'm standing on and almost certainly the Ford Fiesta and Austin Maestro. Now left with two basic staggered platforms either side of an automated crossing. Murray Liston.
A Class 116 DMU seen east of Hairmyres on the East Kilbride branch, circa 1974-76. John Horne Collection.
Ex Class 127 DMU (55980 + 55970), now in Parcels service, heads south over Grafton Lane, just south of Hereford between the site of Redhill Junction and Merryhill/Redhill Tunnel, 22nd May 1988. Hereford Driver Neil Marsh is at the controls. John Crooks.
Class 128 Diesel Parcels Unit, M55994, stands in one of the middle roads in Manchester Victoria station. 30th June 1984. Paul James.
Class 108 DMU set B967, 54492 + 53619, heads south at Coedmoor, between Hereford and Tram Inn, with a Cardiff bound service. 23rd April 1988. John Crooks.
