'Hybrid' Class 100 Gloucester DMBS 53355 and Class 105 Cravens DMCL 53812 having arrived from Blackburn at Manchester Victoria on 17th February 1986. They were at one time earmarked for preservation by the National Railway Museum, but a change of policy at the museum saw them consigned for scrap. They did have a brief spell of fame, achieving celebrity status with enthusiasts, but I guess not the general travelling public, due to their survival long after other Class 100 and 105 units. Gordon Edgar.
Class 120 unit 51581 + 59587 + 51585 has arrived at Manchester Victoria from Blackpool North on 17th February 1986. The driver making his way along the platform rubs his hands, presumably not with glee at seeing a comfortable former Western Region-allocated Swindon Cross-Country three-car unit, but most likely from the bone-biting cold of the day. The two motor coaches from this unit were converted to a parcels set just three months later. Gordon Edgar.
The blue and grey liveried Newton Heath-allocated (N677) Class 104 53534, paired with plain blue 53507, was a unique combination in the North West at this time. It had been transferred from Bletchley depot, and was moved again to Chester depot in May 1989 until its withdrawal came in June 1990. It was photographed leaving Manchester Victoria on 6th September 1988, for once a dry day for my visit to this station. Sprinter units by this time were ousting the older first generation DMUs, and 150 201 was at the same platform forming a service to Blackburn. Gordon Edgar.
BRCW Class 104s 53499 and 53470 forming the 18:15 to Wigan Wallgate departing from Manchester Victoria in the rain on 2nd June 1987. Gordon Edgar.
A very wet 22nd March 1986 in the depot yard at Shields, Glasgow. Recently transferred from Newton Heath and Derby respectively were Class 120 Swindon Cross Country DMCLs 53666 and 53647 respectively, both with engines removed. A third 120 vehicle is behind. Alongside Strathclyde PTE-liveried 303071 was 47578 of Eastfield depot. Taken during an organised visit, some party members visible to the right. Gordon Edgar.
Largs railway station on 23rd March 1986, before work on electrification began. On the left was Class 120 Cross Country DMU 53705 + 59264 + 53687 and on the right Class 101/107 hybrid unit 101320 (51248 + 59800 + 52011). Gordon Edgar.
Adrossan Town station on 23 March 1986 just before electrification of the route was expected to commence. At the head of the line of Class 101/107 units is Metro-Cammell hybrid unit 101430 (comprising 51803 + 59802 + 52008) in Strathclyde PTE livery. A full electrified service commenced from 19th January 1987. Gordon Edgar.
Ardrossan Town station on 23rd March 1986 just before electrification, with Swindon Class 120 "Cross Country" 3-car unit, with 53677 visible and Class 107 Derby "Heavyweight" 3-car units in Strathclyde livery, with set 107427 (52020 + 59793 + 51987) at the front. The ruin of Ardrossan castle's 15th century keep stands prominent on the hill. Gordon Edgar.
Ayr Depot yard on 23rd March 1986, with Class 37 37131 and Class 107 Derby Heavyweight DMU 107445, with DMCL 52015 visible. The grey Toad (Type AA21) brake van, DW17415 built at GWR Swindon Works in 1940, is noteworthy. Gordon Edgar.
Network South-East liveried Class 101 set L224 (51445 + 54362), photographed at Melton Mowbray while working a Norwich to Birmingham train on 16 June 1990. It was allocated to Cambridge depot. Peter Tandy.
Class 119 unit L575 (51060 + 59419 + 51088) was pulling away from Radley in Oxfordshire after dropping off some commuters with an afternoon stopping service from London Paddington to Oxford on 4 July 1989. The alignment of the long-gone Abingdon branch along with its platform edging can be seen in what was the not very busy car park. Peter Tandy.
Class 117 set L405 (51381 + 59491 + 51340) leaving Radley on 4 July 1989 while working a Didcot to Oxford local train. The two cyclists would struggle to find a space for their machines in 2024 as modern commuter units don't allow for such things quite as well as did their 1st generation counterparts. Peter Tandy.
The embankment of the M42 nearby Water Orton is the location of this picture of class 101 T216 (51206 + 54054) leading a 3 car suburban set away from Birmingham towards Derby. The working, on 21 May 1988, appeared to be an ECS move probably from Tyseley to Etches park. Peter Tandy.
This picture was taken on 27 April 1990 and is a graphic demonstration of how things just outside Stratford-upon-Avon station have changed over the years. The goods loop, signalbox, gasholders, canning factory and chimneys have all gone and it's next to impossible to reach this spot for a "now" comparison shot in 2024. The train is class 114 set T026 (54010 + 53006) leaving the town with the 08.12 service to Leamington Spa, the return of this, the 07.30 from Leamington (see image 20787). Peter Tandy.
I have very few photographs taken at Crewe and this is certainly my only after-dark shot from there. It shows class 108 set S947 (51567 + 53621) leading another unrecorded Class 101 set in platform 7 waiting to leave with an evening train to Shrewsbury on 20 October 1990. My notes say that it was a 15 second exposure on medium format 400asa TRI-X film at an aperture of f5.6 with the camera resting on my camera box. I had been out and about on the Network North-West day and hadn't want to lumber myself with the additional weight of my heavy tripod. Peter Tandy.

A Class 119 DMU with the Branch Line Society Gloucestershire railtour at Mells on the Hempstead branch on 22 March 1969. Closest is thought to be 51054. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A Class 101 DMU in Haltwhistle station with a Newcastle - Carlisle service sometime in 1972. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 116 DMU set P322 (presumably 50090 + 59352 + 50132) passes a Western with a rake of Mk2s as it arrives into Newton Abbot with the 12:56 from Paignton on 2 November 1975. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A three-car refurbished Met-Camm with Class 111 DMBS E50137 closest at Rotherham Masborough in March 1977. Stuart Mackay Collection.
