Nottingham, 8/1/91. 53986, labeled set 280 - note the set number is also under the bodyside vehicle Number. It is formed with a Class 101 labeled set N616! Mike Cooper.

2nd November 1986

Stabled on oil soaked trackwork, a Derby Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars M53987 & M54270 were stabled with other DMUs in the Up Sidings at Wigan Wallgate on November 2nd 1986. A shot obtained in more-relaxed BR days when the local P.Way gang let me though a trackside access gate. Martyn Hilbert.

Class 108 53987 is seen stabled outside Tyseley depot on 26.04.1987, while it's partner undergoes repair work. Andy Cole.

Set: LO290

Seeing out its final stint of operation before withdrawal, and having an extended life due to errant Class 142's, a Longsight allocated Derby Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars M53987 & M54270 (LO290), was climbing Farington Curve with the 08.31 Preston to Colne service on August 29th 1992. The DMBS M53987 was officially stored in December 1992 and finally withdrawn in January 1993. The trailer M54270 went on to be paired with a Class 101 DMBS (M53291) and was not withdrawn until June 1993. Following withdrawal, both M53987 & M54270 passed into preservation. M54270 is now at the Mid Norfolk Railway, whilst M53987 went to the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley, where it was used for spare parts and was eventually scrapped in 1998. Martyn Hilbert.

An official image (Derby Works negative 60/53) showing a new (blue square) Derby Lightweight set in the yard at Derby Works. The DMBS is M51416, its partner is presumably M56271, the pair were delivered new to Ryecroft depot in February 1960. British Railways.

February 1960

M51417 was a BR Derby works built Class 108, this unit, which is obviously brand new, went to Walsall (3C Rycroft depot) 20/02/1960, delivered with M56272. It was withdrawn from Longsight 09/06/1992 and scrapped at Gwent Demolition, Margam. The picture was taken on the LNWR side of New Street, the Midland side still had the overall roof but this on side the roof was considered too badly damaged in the war and was demolished. Just behind the unit is the connecting foot bridge which ran from the Stephenson Street, through the Queens Hotel building (right) over Queens Drive, which divided the Midland and LNWR sides, and exited onto Station Street. The bridge had been open when both sides had their roofs but clearly this side had to have roof and BR provided the minimum they could get away with, the rather nasty corrugated asbestos roof seen here.
