Class 104 (53504 + 59228 + 53556) at North Queensferry in August 1987. This BRCW class was unheard of north of the border when we cut our spotters teeth but by the mid 80s it was a case of "anything goes". Here we see a former Buxton based driving motor bringing up the rear of a Fife Circle train which is heading towards Inverkeithing. Alistair Ness.
From Birmingham to Bathgate 2. Services restarted from Edinburgh to Bathgate in 1986 and used a variety of worn out DMUs shuttling to and from a new single platform terminus station built in the former goods yard. In August 1987 we see BRCW class 104 DMU 53464 still wearing its M prefix following its transfer from Newton Heath 6 months earlier. It was running with blue / grey centre car 59168. This station closed in 2010 when the through route to Airdrie was reopened and electrified and a new station constructed nearby. Murray Liston.

In the "anything goes" period before Sprinterisation, this view taken alongside Haymarket depot in August 1987 shows just what a variety of DMUs and liveries could be found. In the centre, a 6 car set is forming a rush hour service to Fife, an all blue "Buxton" BRCW class 104 triple (Set 457 53504 + 59229 + 53556) on the rear and (most of) a Strathclyde red Derby class 107 in front, but with a Met Camm class 101 car leading. The first units were ordered for the London Midland Region, with the majority of the class for use in North West of England, sets were also used on Tyneside, like the Metro-Cammell class 101's these units truly worked nationwide, but of all the routes worked by the class the Buxton route was the one with which they became synonymous. Here is a Newton Heath allocated set comprising of M53465 + M53499 in Stockport's platform 3a with the Stalybridge shuttle service on 30th August 1987. Andrew J Crowther.
