Having worked in from Waverley as 2V04, a hybrid 3 car set prepares to cross over to form the 2G36 0938 Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh service on 18th June 1983. A class 122 railcar, Sc55000, leads a couple of Metro-Cammell vehicles (51248 closest); at this point the 122 was based at Haymarket but its usefulness would mean that it was to last a further 11 years in service until withdrawal in 1994 from Laira. Beyond the station can be seen part of what was once a sprawling empire of linoleum mills. However, the distinctive smell can still be found in the town as one mill continues to produce the floor covering. The goods yard is in its latter years; the closure of the harbour branch and those mills significantly reduced the freight traffic. Latterly, a domestic coal merchant seemed to be the main user. The sight of a wee Barclay 06 parked beside the signal box was long gone. Bruce Galloway.

A Class 101 passes Ouston Junction, Birtley, Co. Durham southbound down the East Coast Main Line in pre-electrification days, on 20/06/1983, with the 18:58 Newcastle-Durham local service. The trackwork to the right is the junction to the Consett steelworks: the original photographer remarked that track rationalisation was evident in this view. Graeme Phillips Collection.

In 1983 I went on a tour of all the mainline railways of Wales. Towards the end of the trip we found ourselves on the borders at Shrewsbury, and I took the opportunity of capturing this view of Shrewsbury cathedral over the River Severn. Also in view is the impressive LNWR Seven Bridge Junction signal box and, stabled in the sidings, a number of DMU sets - Class 101 and Class 120. Chris McKee.
Look, no wires. Trim looking Metro Cammell 101 309 pops out of The Mound Tunnels and is rolling into what was Platform 16 at Edinburgh Waverley. The destination screen reads Cowdenbeath, perhaps set in advance of the next working. Circa July 1983. alicia hartman.
Look, no wires. Metro Cammell 101 324 sitting at Haymarket, Platform 1, with an eastbound service for Edinburgh Waverley. The original Haymarket train shed to centre left has been dismantled and part was preserved on the B&KR at Bo'ness. An approaching Type 2 in the distance may be heading for the nearby Haymarket Depot. Circa July 1983. alicia hartman.

3-car class 101 DMU set C811 (51801 + 59548 + 51519) is seen approaching Llandeilo with the 10.50 Shrewsbury to Swansea on 2 July 1983. The Central Wales Line from Shrewsbury to Swansea tended to be worked in the early 1980's by power twins of either class 101 but mostly class 120 Swindon Cross Country sets. Adrian Nicholls.

In the days before air-con most of the locals and crew bailed off to sit on the station until the southbound train came into view. Adrian Nicholls.
On 2nd July 1983 a Met Camm 3 car unit (326 or 328) approaches Swing Bridge East signal box with local service 2H73, the 1440 Edinburgh to Dunblane. The slightly ornate box, located between Falkirk Grahamston and Camelon, controlled a bridge (of the swing variety - but you'd guessed that) over the Forth and Clyde Canal. Bruce Galloway.
Met Camm unit 101346 (presumably 51532 + 59554 + 51798) leaves Falkirk Grahamston with an afternoon local for Glasgow Queen street. A grand selection of 1980's motors are in the background. 2nd July 1983. Bruce Galloway.
