circa 1963
This was Penns Station on the Sutton Park line that runs between Walsall and Water Orton. The line closed to passengers on 18th January 1965, but is still open as a major freight artery. Unfortunately undated, probably 1963, this picture shows a Birmingham bound DMU with Gloucester RC&W M56105 leading, paired with a Park Royal DMBS. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. In this undated picture Alvechurch station presents a lovely summer rural aspect. The Station Master is in full uniform and has a smile for the alighting passengers, the old station nameboard is in good condition as are the buildings. Patiently waiting for departure time for Birmingham is a Gloucester RC&W class 100, the driver's approach to the uniform is less formal the the station master. Alvechurch is still open and thriving being part of the Cross City line to Redditch, it is now electrified, but the crossing to the fields and footpath (in front of the train) is still very much used by walkers. The 5.35pm Birmingham New Street - Rugby service, formed of Gloucester and Met-Camm twins, take the spur from Nuneaton Abbey Street to Trent Valley on Sunday 22 September 1963. This was a scheduled diversion due to electrification work. Michael Mensing.

A GRC&W twin set between Berkswell and Tile Hill in November 1963, led by M56112. It displays 'Rugby Midland' on the destination blind. Michael Mensing.
9th November 1963
The 1.25pm Birmingham New Street - Rugby Midland is seen East of Humber Road Junction, Coventry, where masts have been fitted in preparation for electrification. The train on 9 November 1963 is formed of a GRC&W twin and a Met-Camm triple, freshly painted M56103 leads. Michael Mensing.

2nd December 1963
On a gloomy 2nd December 1963 a green liveried Gloucester class 100 dmu makes it's call at Brownhills Station, the train is a working from Burton upon Trent to Wolverhampton. This section of line ran from Ryecroft Junction (Walsall) to Wichnor Junction and closed as a through passenger route 18/01/1965. Today no trace of the station remains. 2nd December 1963
A Gloucester RCW unit (Class 100) is just leaving the pleasant llittle station at Pelsall on 2 December 1963, it was the first station north of Walsall on the South Staffordshire line to Wychnor Junction, it lasted until passenger services were withdrawn in 1965. As can be seen from Peter's photograph, it had a substantial main station building and a good sized brick built waiting room opposite. A GRC&W DMU arrives into Stockingford station with a Rugby Midland service in January 1964. The leading vehicle appears to be M56110 and has the shed code 2G painted beside the buffers which was Ryecroft. Michael Mensing.
