534.  RAIL BUSES FOR RURAL AREAS   (Contd.)

2.  Proposals for employment of four rail buses on L.M.R.- Noted that scheme is almost ready for submission.  Operating and Mechanical Engineering departments will require a vehicle for testing before being put into service.

3.  Banbury - Bletchley service. - Noted that the Director of Traffic Services has an alternative plan in mind regarding this branch and the General Manager has deferred any further action until receiving and considering the report from the D.T.S.

535.  INTER-CITY SERVICES

1.  Design of units. - Noted that discussion has taken place between officers of the B.T.C. and L.M.Region, arising from which a further assessment of maintenance costs of Davey Paxman engines is being made and a further test is to be held.

2.  Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford scheme. - Noted that revised submission is progressing but cannot be completed until decision reached regarding Davey Paxman engines.

3.  Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester scheme. - Investigation deferred until decision reached regarding Davey Paxman engines.

536.  SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE ARRANGEMENTS

1.  Minutes of meetings of sub-committee held on the 14th August and 17th September noted.

With regard to the servicing of units for the Derby, Nottingham, Leicester Part 1 scheme, the Chairman asked for consideration to be given to the use of the motive power shed at Leicester when steam working is discontinued.  Mr.Adkinson stated that this is a round shed and unsuitable for diesel railcars.

Mr.Finlayson asked for consideration to be given to the housing of the dynamometer cars at Etches Park.  These are now housed at Crewe but this is not an economical arrangement.  Messrs.Gould and Finlayson will investigate possibility.

2.  Day to day maintenance. - As a result of the decision to carry out examination at intervals of five days, future schemes are being re-diagrammed and consideration is being given to the economics of individual schemes.  Still under investigation.

3.  Number of maintenance depots required. - The Chairman emphasised that every care must be taken to ensure that the number of maintenance depots requested is kept to the absolute minimum and strong justification will be necessary for any submissions.
