Barry Island - Treherbert

DMUs were gradually introduced to services from Barry Island from 13th January 1958.

Class 116s were the main DMUs used for many years.

Class 116 DMU at Pontypridd

1958

Two Derby suburban triple DMU sets seen at "Rhondda Cutting", Pontypridd circa mid-1958. It carries a plate with its diagram BB, this left Barry at 05:35 for two morning trips to Treherbert, followed in the afternoon by two trips to Merthyr, after the second of which the return run was through to Llantwit Major, a total of over 280 miles. Treherbert Station, 01/75, on a typical South Wales Valleys damp day. Note that the platform and station building (on extreme left) are completely seperate. In the platform is a BR (Derby) Suburban 3-car dmu (Class 116) No.C305 on a service to Cardiff and Barry Island. The station was built in 1901 by the Taff Vale Railway at its end-on junction with the Rhondda & Swansea Bay Railway. Hugh Llewelyn.

Class 116 DMU at Trehafod

22nd September 1983

In 1983 there was still a considerable amount of the South Wales industrial landscape to be seen. This is Trehafod and the headstocks are Lewis Merthyr colliery, it was once one of the most productive mines in the country. The colliery is now part of the Rhonda Heritage Park. The train is the 10.19 Treherbert - Barry service on 22/09/1983, at this time all Valley Lines services were formed of Cardiff based class 116 units. Geoff Dowling.
