Reduced to two-cars, a Class 116 Suburban DMU formed of Driving Motor Brake Second M53870 and Driving Motor Second M53923, were arriving at Rufford with a Preston to Ormskirk service on April 12th 1988. The unit had previously worked in the West Midlands, and had been allocated to Newton Heath (Set N652), to cover for almost new Class 142 Pacers that were then being sidelined with numerous faults. Coming out of the haze on a warm afternoon, A Swindon Class 120 three-car DMU was approaching Dawlish Warren with a Paignton to Exeter St Davids all-stations service on April 7th 1980. Martyn Hilbert.

105 DMU

With Spillers Mill dominating the scene, Cravens Class 105 two-car DMU set 32 was stabled between duties at Cambridge on April 30th 1980. To the left of the Cravens, an old internal user LNER coach is visible, whilst stabled on the centre road is a snowplough converted from a former LNER tender. The mill suffered a fire in 2010 during renovation, and the surviving portion has been converted to residential apartments. Martyn Hilbert.

105 DMU

At the one-time Cromer Beach terminus of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GNJR), a Cravens Class 105 two-car DMU, formed of cars E51294 & M56114 had arrived from Norwich on April 29th 1980. The driver is changing ends for the run to the small terminus at Sheringham. The station at Cromer had just one platform face in use, the station being surrounded by empty and redundant railway land, a legacy from the days when the station here handled heavy Summer holiday traffic from the North and the Midlands via the now closed M&GNJR. The view across the station throat at Norwich on April 27th 1980. In the foreground Class 104 Driving Motor Composite Lavatory (DMCL) E56187 was stabled between duties at the head of a long rake of DMU sets, whilst station pilot 03084 and its attendant runner truck were positioning a rake of Mk.1 coaches into the station. 122 DMU

A pair Class 122 Single Units, 55006 & 55005 were running in tandem, arriving at Starcross whilst forming the 17.07 Plymouth to Honiton all-stations service on June 1st 1990. This was the period following the migration of the Class 142 Skipper fleet to the North, with various still operational first generation DMU sets being drafted in to the West Country, prior to the arrival of Class 150/2 Sprinter units. Two Derby Lightweight (later Class 108) sets with a Liverpool service (and so likely Allerton sets) in Manchester Central probably in the mid-to-late 1960s. All four vehicles have the BR logos on the cab doors and three inch numbers, one has a full yellow end and at least two just yellow panel. Steve Davies Collection.
