Carlisle Citadel station has always been a mecca for the railfan and even today, for the follower of the modern railway scene, remains so, with a good variety of motive power. On 25th June 1966 Wigan Spring's Branch's Stanier 'Black 5' 4-6-0 44873 blows off impatiently in the bay platform 5, with an English Electric Type 3 and 'Derby Lightweight' DMBS M79015 in the two centre roads.
