Chester 9th April 1977. Heading back to London from Holyhead after a week in Ireland we decided not to take the obvious direct route via Crewe but at the last minute to change at Chester and ride through Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton on this Class 101 diesel multiple unit (M50322 seems to be the closest vehicle) changing to an electric for the rest of the journey via Birmingham. You could do that sort of thing at no extra cost in BR days... Pete LG99.
London St Pancras 5th March 1977. Sulzer 1Co-Co1 Peak diesel 45121 is waiting to depart on the far right while a Class 127 DMU arrives from the north passing the now long-gone 1957 brick-built signal box. Pete LG99.
I took The Lakelander special from London Euston to Carnforth where steam took over from electric. While waiting for our stock to be brought in to the Furness platform by double-headed LNER A1 4-6-2 4472 Flying Scotsman & LNWR Hardwicke this Class 108 dmu on a service train to Carlisle via Barrow-in-Furness arrived. 47431 arrives at Doncaster with the Derby Laboratory Coach set on 21st May 1988. The unit being hauled are ex-Class 103 vehicles, 56162 and 50407, renumbered RDB975090 + RDB975089. It was a "Laboratory 5 TRIM Unit" and was used for measuring ride quality. Syd Young.
The Ultrasonic Test Train is seen at York on the night of 8th February 1990. The set was made up of Class 101 Metro-Cammell driving cars, DB977391 (51433) and DB977392 (53167). The centre car was DB999602 (62483). Syd Young.

The RCTS Reunion railtour in Kettering and Corby station on 22 November 1975. The headocde 1L01 is in the centre cab window and the tour headboard can just be seen inside the left cab window. The Six Bells Junction website lists the Class 101 as 50325 + 59118 + 50307, and out of sight is a Class 104 listed as 50498 + 59165 + 50446. Stuart Mackay Collection.

A Met-Camm twin DMU at Kinross Junction on 13 April 1963. It is coming off the line from Alloa, and Perth is on the destination blind, and the timetable shows there was a 3.20pm Alloa - Perth diesel service. The now-demolished chimneys at Stewartby dominate the landscape as Class 121 units 55031+55029 pass working the 10.50 from Bletchley on 24 August 1999. Both of these vehicles carried names at this time - 55029 was "Marston Vale" and 55031 was "Leslie Crabbe". Both vehicles later saw departmental use; 55029 became 977968 and 55031 became 977976.
