Class 101 Driving Motor 2nd Sc50184 is awaiting departure from Carnoustie whilst working the 09:00 Arbroath – Dundee service on Thursday 10th June 1982. I had just travelled down from Arbroath in this car, in the former 1st Class section at the front, now downgraded to 2nd Class. Look at how much room there is in those seats. Sheer luxury... ...you don’t get that in a 158! Sc50184 entered service in early 1957 as E50184, a Driving Motor Composite. It was part of a 4 car set allocated to the North Eastern Region’s Darlington District for the Darlington – Saltburn service. Just emerging from Carnoustie yard is 37 188 which appears to be a light engine. In the late 1960s I spent a week’s holiday at Carnoustie. Whilst the rest of the family were on the beach, I spent most of my time standing at this level crossing watching the signalman turning the wheel which opened and closed the crossing gates and also heralded the approach of another train. Brian McDevitt.

The driver’s door is open on a Gloucester RC&W Class 119 Driving Motor 2nd at Redhill on Friday 4th June 1982. This particular set carries number L573 (presumably 51083 + 59417 + 51055) which indicates that it was allocated to Reading. At the time the 119s were in use on the Reading to Gatwick Airport service, services to/from Tonbridge and the slower services to/from Reading. The real target of my camera was the incoming service on the left, the 16:38 from Brighton to Victoria. This comprised of sets 7902 and 7373. 7373 was one of many 4CIGs but 7902 is of interest in that it was one of the 12 4VEPs converted to 4VEG units with additional luggage racks and reduced seating for use on services to Gatwick Airport. Brian McDevitt.

An unidentified Gloucester RC&W Motor Brake 2nd leads a Metro-Cammell car off the Forth Bridge and approaches Dalmeny with the 11:30 Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh Waverley service on on 13th September 1966. From an original 35mm transparency by an unidentified photographer - an eBay purchase. Brian McDevitt Collection.

An eBay purchase was this negative of an almost new Metro Cammell 3 Car DMU at Inverkeithing. The negative is dated 15th May 1960 so we are just a few weeks into the Fife Diesel Interval service which was launched a few weeks previously on 4th April along with dieselisation of the Edinburgh to Aberdeen service. Unlike me, the photographer took the trouble to record the numbers of all three cars. The unit was composed of Driving Motor Composite Sc51538, Trailer Composite Sc59566 and Driving Motor Brake 2nd Sc51468. An ex BR Document in the National Archives of Scotland shows all three vehicles as being new to Leith Central on 17th September 1959. The set is probably working an Edinburgh to Dundee service although it could also have originated in Glasgow as services from both Queen Street and Buchanan Street also came this way. Note the “D1 Wed” board which indicates the duty the set is working. Brian McDevitt Collection.

My notes say that this is Sc51243 calling at Inverkeithing with the 07:03 Edinburgh Waverley to Cowdenbeath service on 15th June 1983. However, Sc51243 was a Driving Motor Brake 2nd so I can only assume I scribbled down the number of the rear car as the train pulled out! The station depicted here opened in 1890 in connection with the Forth Bridge project. It replaced the previous 1877 station which had been situated on the south side of Boreland Road overbridge at the far end of the station. The relocation was necessary as the new line to the Forth Bridge bypassed the old station which was situated on what initially became the North Queensferry branch. The station building to the right of the DMU was replaced during redevelopment of Inverkeithing station in the mid 1980s. The building on the left platform remains in use today. Brian McDevitt.

The 06:45 Kirkcaldy to Inverkeithing service on 5 May 1983, which continued unadvertised as a workers’ service to Rosyth Dockyard. DMS Sc50144 leads car, the remainder are three further Metro Cammell vehicles (one still in blue) and two bubble cars. Taken at Naval Base Junction on what was once the North Queensferry Branch. This was where the line into Rosyth Dockyard diverged from the North Queensferry Branch. The line to North Queensferry fell into disuse in 1954 but the box remained to control the convergence of the double line from Inverkeithing South Junction which became single line beyond here and to provide access to both Caldwell’s Paper Mill and Ward’s Shipbreaking Yard (via the line in the foreground, which also gave access to Cruicks Quarry which dispatched ballast by rail until the early/mid 1980s). Naval Base Junction signal box closed in 1964, replaced by a ground frame, when the double track between here and Inverkeithing South was singled. Brian McDevitt.

The demise of my beloved Deltics was something of a shock to me. I resolved to buy myself a decent camera and capture as much as I could of the railway network before it all disappeared. This was one of my early attempts….. …..I managed to straighten it up in Photoshop but can’t do much about the composition! Having grown up with the Scottish Gloucesters, I was more than a little pleased to see this arriving at Manchester Piccadilly on the 15:13 ex New Mills, 26th May 1982. M50351 was the leading car - note the partial number on the buffer beam. Brian McDevitt.

Sc50192 departs Inverkeithing with the 13:42 Edinburgh - Kirkcaldy working in the days before the Fife Circle was invented! This was 26th March 1983. The up platform here is partially constructed over the Keithing Burn, a stream which leads into the Firth of Forth via Inverkeithing Bay. Up trains leaving here face a stiff climb and will be 150 feet higher when they cross the Forth Bridge Brian McDevitt.

124 DMU

Taken on the 26th May 1982, an iconic class of DMU leaves Manchester Victoria with the 15:45 Manchester Piccadilly to Hull. M51952 leads a four car set which was probably formed of a mix of Class 123 and 124 vehicles. Always had a bit of a soft spot for these as they reminded me of my favourite EMUs, the Glasgow “Blue Trains”. Brian McDevitt.

In the 1980s and 1990s Elstree & Borehamwood was my local station. Here we see Class 127 DMBS M51622 approaching with the 12:00 St Pancras to Bedford service on Saturday 22nd January 1983. Brian McDevitt.

A Class 126 DMU arrives into Girvan station with the 2.00pm ex-Glasgow Central on 10 August 1973. Closest appears to be SC51045 which is displaying set number 115 in the left cab window. Michael Mensing.
