Services restarted from Edinburgh to Bathgate in 1986 and used a variety of worn out DMUs shuttling to and from a new single platform terminus station built in the former goods yard. In August 1987 we see BRCW class 104 DMU 53464 still wearing its M prefix following its transfer from Newton Heath 6 months earlier. This station closed in 2010 when the through route to Airdrie was reopened and electrified and a new station constructed nearby. Murray Liston.

Smoking towards Fife. A Swindon Cross Country class 120 set (534, presumably 53732 + 59281 + 53686) smokes into Haymarket tunnel one afternoon in August 1987 on an Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy stopping service. Murray Liston.

Weird sight at Wester Hailes. The suburb of Wester Hailes grew rapidly in the 1970s but despite straddling the Edinburgh to Glasgow Central and Carstairs route, the locals were not provided with a station until May 1987. Three months after opening, we see the strange sight of a Swindon Cross Country class 120 DMU (53733 and presumably 59262 + 53654) stopping here on an Edinburgh to Glasgow Central via Shotts service. This was during the "anything goes" period where worn out DMUs displaced from Sprinterisation elsewhere were moved around the country and Scotrail got a few of these sets to tide them over during the latter half of the 1980s. Kinghorn Met Camm. The livery has changed, but Class 101 DMUs had plied the Edinburgh to Dundee route for the best part of 30 years before this shot was taken at Kinghorn in August 1987. 101362 (53187 and presumably 59073 + 53186) is about to pass through the station with an Edinburgh to Dundee semi fast, next stop Kirkcaldy. Pottering past Pettycur A Swindon Cross Country Class 120 DMU heads downhill past Pettycur bay between Kinghorn and Burntisland with a Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh stopping service in August 1987. Murray Liston.
Kinking to Kinghorn. A Swindon Class 120 DMU (53658) enters Kinghorn Tunnel in August 1987 with an Edinburgh to Kirkcaldy stopping service. This tunnel was built by different contractors starting at each end and some miscalculation resulted in a distinct kink in the middle, very visible in the good old days from the front of a DMU and still causing a speed restriction.
