Class 128 parcel car 55993 at Trent Junction. Date unknown, it was painted into this livery circa spring 1988 when it was a Tyseley vehicle and it has a Tyseley set number in the cab window. Old Instamatic slides taken probably in summer 1973 at Westbury. This was during the period when the Portsmouth-Bristol trains had been strengthened to six coaches, resulting in WR dmus being drafted in to supplement the Hampshire demus. Closest is Class 119 set B577, presumably 51091 + 59422 + 51063. We were on a Southern Rover and had come out from Salisbury on the dmu to catch the Summer Saturdays only Cardiff-Weymouth which at that time was the only train booked via Chandlers Ford and formed of a Class 47 and Mk 1s. Despite living by the Reading-Tonbridge line when WR dmus took over the service, I only ever got this one picture of a Metro-Cammell Class 101 dmu. The Class 101s were intended to be the replacements for the Tadpoles, and one appeared on the 07:44 Tonbridge-Redhill a few times in "corporate blue" days, but they were found to be unsuitable from the outset and were covered by other types until the Class 119s arrived. This picture was taken much later, about 10 years after the changeover, and shows a 101 leaving Guildford for Reading. Tony Watson.
