A dull, grey and wet morning on platform 2 at Wigan Wallgate sees Class 104 53535 at the front of the 10.00 departure for Kirkby. This 1958 vintage car was by then showing its age but it lasted in service until February 1986, before being scrapped almost immediately. 20th October 1984. S Gaskell.

The data panel on a Liverpool bound seen at Wigan North Western DMU shows that it's a Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second. DQ212 is the design code for that type of vehicle and it has 52 2nd class seats. It was last shopped for a C3 exam on 7th August 1981 at works code 5458, which was Doncaster Works Carriage Shops, and would be due for shopping again in February 1984. Class 118 DMS no. 51331 leading BRCW 3-car suburban set T318 correctly formed with class 118 vehicles 59483 & 51316. The photo was taken peering round an inconveniently placed train of Brute trolleys on the platform! They were often useful for sitting on though.
