Class 101 E54365 and a Class 108 DMBS makes a smokey exit from the gloom of Leeds City station on 20/10/1990 with a departure for Sheffield, late on a dull Saturday afternoon, as amassed shoppers look on from the platform. DMBS M51190 leads a Class 101 formation at Rhyl on 15/05/1983 with a Manchester Victoria-Llandudno service. The second vehicle has a narrower grey band around the windows, which considerably alters the appearance, making it look more like a Class 108 at a glance. Graeme Phillips Collection.

A formation of at least eight vehicles in no less than three liveries clatters through the Welsh scenery near Barmouth Junction, circa 1980. Starting from the front car (furthest right), they appear to be: Class 108 DMBS, Class 104 TC(L), Class 108 DMC(L), Class 101 DMBS, Class 101 DTC(L), Class 101 DMBS, Class 101 TS(L), then the vehicle conveying the photographer. Class 108 cars E50614 E56209 at Leeds, 13/06/1975. Note the miniature headcode display, as this was prior to their abolition in 1976. The photographer's notes suggest this pair of cars was a demonstrator for the DMU refurbishment programme, and it generally operated between Leeds and Sheffield, although the original demonstrator was a 3-car Class 101. Cars 51323 59475 53220 are seen about to enter Newcastle station - the first two are Class 118s, 53220 just visible at the rear was Class 101. Having recently transferred from South Wales, leading car 51323 carries the red chevron, which was usually accompanied by a red dragon, but the latter has evidently been painted out. 20/01/1988. A number of Class 101 units are seen in Darlington DMU depot (DN) that was to the north of the station in May 1976. It had an allocation of mainly Class 101s for local services around Teesside, until the mid-1980s, from when all the north-east's DMUs were concentrated at Heaton (HT) depot, Newcastle.
