A Chester allocated 5-car Class 101 DMU rattles through platform 5 at Wigan North Western with what was probably an empty stock working on the 13th July 1985. DMBS 53310 is at the front followed by 59128 then 53326. The rear pair consists of 51188 with 54348. S Gaskell.
Wigan North Western was home to three pairs of Class 108 DMUs on this bright winter's day in December 1984. The 4-car set in platform 4 is likely to be the 11.35 Blackpool North to Liverpool Lime Street service, due to leave Wigan at 12.22, while the 2-car set in platform 3 would form the next Liverpool service an hour later. A class 108 DMU set led by car M52041 awaits departure from platform 2 at Preston with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on the 22nd October 1984. This car continued in service until November 1992 and was scrapped two months later. An exposure of 11 seconds at f8 was used. S Gaskell.
Class 104 DMU car 53524, the last to carry a white stripe signifying its modified suspension, is seen coupled to 53464 passing Appley Locks between Appley Bridge and Parbold on the 21st August 1984. The large house on the hill is Parbold Hall, then home of Sir Peter Moores, son of Sir John Moores the founder of Littlewoods Pools. S Gaskell.
My usual route into Wigan along the towpath of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal took me out of the countryside and through a grim area of factories and derelict warehouses. Approaching the town on the 24th June 1984 I paused to capture a train of four class 108 DMU cars rattling its way between Wigan and Southport. S Gaskell.
