My usual route into Wigan along the towpath of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal took me out of the countryside and through a grim area of factories and derelict warehouses. Approaching the town on the 24th June 1984 I paused to capture a train of four class 108 DMU cars rattling its way between Wigan and Southport.
