51384 leads set L407 (presumably with 59494 + 51342) head away from Twyford with the 13:15 Reading to Paddington on 21 July 1989. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Southport station on 21 May 1988. A pair of 2-car Class 108 dmus departs towards Wigan Wallgate and Manchester. I had been working in Southport this week, and decided to take a few photos before catching my train home. First I walked to"Steamport", the railway museum housed in the old steam depot. The route to Steamport involved crossing a long footbridge, where this photo was taken from. Lewis Bevan.
A Class 117 3-car unit (TS410 with vehicles 51373 + 59486 + 51415) arrives at Birmingham Moor Street with a service bound for Snow Hill on 23 April 1988. Lewis Bevan.
The weekend of 5/6 December 1987 saw the last semaphore signals between Leicester and Bedford replaced by colour light signals. I spent part of the Sunday around Wellingborough taking a few photos of the old gantries being removed etc, and got this photo of a 2-car Class 101 unit (Norwich set 87, 54080 visible) on a special working at Wellingborough. I think this unit was being used to transport signalling engineers around the area, and, from memory, I think the 2 chaps walking along the platform had just alighted from this dmu. Lewis Bevan.
The stabling sidings at Leamington on 4 October 1987 contain two dmu sets and Class 31 no. 31127. On the left is T324, presumably 53101 + 59672 + 53053. Lewis Bevan.
My only visit to Windsor and Eton Central station was on 24 October 1987, when I took advantage of a "Network SouthEast day" ticket to visit this branch. I travelled from Slough on the 11.32 departure, which consisted of Class 117 2-car set L401 (vehicles 51375 + 51333), seen here at Windsor and Eton Central after arrival. I returned to Slough on the same unit, and only had time to grab this shot, with the sun being most unhelpful! Lewis Bevan.
A Class 108 2-car dmu, comprising vehicles 51916 + 51571 at Kettering to form a service for Corby (despite what s showing in the destination panel!) on 18 August 1987. As this was a south-facing bay at Kettering I assume the unit will shunt to one of the main line platforms before heading to Corby. Lewis Bevan.
A pair of Cravens 2-car Class 105 dmu sets are an unusual sight approaching Chichester on 21 June 1986. This was 1Z27 Stevenage-Portsmouth Harbour and return, the "Vectis Velocipede" railtour. The two 2-car units consisted of vehicles 54122 + 53359 and 54442 + 51284. The route taken by the railtour was via Willesden HL, Kensington Olympia, Epsom and Leatherhead. Participants on the tour were given the option of visiting the Isle of Wight once they had arrived at Portsmouth Harbour, and sampling the railways on the island. Lewis Bevan.
The RCTS "Fensman No 4" railtour at Oakington on 7 April 1979. Formed of Norwich set 55, a Class 105/104 hybrid (51265 + 56189), which was used for a Branch Line Society tour the same day. Roger Geach Collection.
The RCTS Torksey railtour seen at Torksey on the 28th October 1978. The tour ran from Derby and was comprised of 50311 + 59129 + 50325 (set T5403) and 50336 + 59121 + 50309 (TS407). Roger Geach Collection.

In the centre of the frame a Class 101 can be seen on the Rosyth Dockyard branch at Jamestown. Taken late afternoon on 5 April 1983. A loco-hauled service is on the main line and is entering the town of Inverkeithing on the upper right. Stuart Mackay.
Passing at Pollokshaws. By 1999 time was running out for first generation DMUs in Scotland, with a handful of Met Camm power twin sets operating from Corkerhill depot on some Glasgow suburban services. Taken on 1st August that year, when these had only a few months to go before being replaced by Sprinters. 101692 (53170 + 53253) was repainted into a unique blue livery in 1996 and is seen at Pollokshaws West on a Glasgow Central to Barrhead service on 1st August 1999. Following withdrawal from Longsight, this set was preserved. Passing in the distance is 101688 (51431 + 51501) which was destroyed in a blaze near Mossend on 17th November of that year. Murray Liston.
A break at Barrhead. By 1999 time was running out for first generation DMUs in Scotland, with a handful of Met Camm power twin sets operating from Corkerhill depot on some Glasgow suburban services. Taken on 1st August that year, when these had only a few months to go before being replaced by Sprinters. 101688 (51431 + 51501) are seen during a runround at Barrhead on 1st August 1999, with the guard taking a break in the sunshine. This unit was not so lucky, being completely destroyed by fire near Mossend Yard on 17th November that year. Murray Liston.
Late afternoon in August 1987 and we see a 6 car DMU leaving platform 16 with a rush hour service to Fife. The BRCW DMUs were a rarity in Waverley until later reallocations, this set led by 53556 came north in 1986 for a couple of years before moving south again shortly before its withdrawal. It is presumably with 59228 + 53504 and there is a Class 101 on the rear. Murray Liston.
Symmetrical Strangers, almost. On the left we can see a surprise visitor to Westbury in November 1987, class 108 twin set B960 on a Weymouth to Bristol working. Formed of 53602 + 54197, these had been Yorkshire vehicles from new, but reallocated to Bristol just a few months earlier. The BRCW class 118 DMU on the right had been a Devon / Cornwall unit from new, but was reallocated to Cardiff in 1986 where it gained the Red Dragon branding. It was moved to Bristol a month before this photo was taken, the set number changing to B480 when it was seen at Westbury on a Bristol to Weymouth service, the numbers were W51327 + W59470 + W51312. Murray Liston.
Seen crossing over from the south to north approach tracks before entering Waverley one afternoon in August 1987 is this hybrid set using Swindon Cross Country power cars 53699 and 53658 sandwiching Metro Cammell centre car 59571, originally part of a Rolls Royce powered headcode set. Murray Liston.
Swindon class 120 Cross Country set 534 (53686 + 59281 + 53732) are seen rasping through Princes Street Gardens with a service for Kirkcaldy late one afternoon in August 1987/ Murray Liston.
From Strathclyde to Fife. Taken from what is now a tram track, we see a Strathclyde red liveried 3 car DMU accelerating away from Haymarket with a Fife service one evening in August 1987. This comprises most of set 107436 (presumably 51997 + 59784), but the rear car has been substituted with a Metro Cammell vehicle. Murray Liston.
