101324 stands at Stirling formed DMS 53245 (nearest) with TBS 59112 and DMBS 51253 (curiously containing two brake vans!) on 29/Mar/1986. I could not find any record of 53245 listed in 101324 in contemporary set lists although 51253 was, so maintenance requirements or failures might have caused reformations, which might also account for the two brake vans in the set. Another three car set listed had no brake van at all so both may have been temporary formations. Robert Chilton.
Class 116 DMS 53101 at the rear of set T324 formed with class 115 TC 59672 and class 116 DMBS 53053 at Sleaford on 13/Sep/1987. Robert Chilton.
Class 116 DMS 53106 at the rear of set T403 formed with class 127 TSL 59616, class 127 TS 59641 and class 115 DMBS 51852 seen curving away towards Skegness in the summer sun near Boston on 8/Jun/1988. Robert Chilton.
The unusually liveried class 116 DMS 53116 at the head of set TS611 formed with class 127 TSL 59611 and class 116 DMBS 53055, at Birmingham New Street on 12/Jul/1986. I recall that 53055 at the other end of the set was painted to match and I wondered at the time whether on one or other driving car the livery was inspired by a mistake in the grey band being taken too far beyond the saloon windows and then taken complete with white lining round the cab ends to make the best of a bad job. Having said that, the black cab window surrounds and the fact that the sides of every car and the cab ends were emblazoned with 'WM' logos probably suggests that it was a deliberate attempt at a special livery. Robert Chilton.
Three-car set 53878, 59612 and 53056 stabled at Leicester with Norwich's set 72 behind, headed by 51201 and presumably with out of sight, 54347. Unusually the 116 (with class 127 centre trailer) appears to have a Tyseley set number board in the 2nd man's window but with no set number apparently on it (they would be set T620 at this time). The following year 53878 and 59612 were reformed into four-car set T421 and 53056 was in three-car set T342. Robert Chilton.
On 18/10/1976, what is probably an ECS is seen at Manors, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The vehicles furthest from the camera (leading) appear to be Class 101/102 with a buffet car. Graeme Phillips Collection.
50045 leading 56004 in their unique South Yorkshire PTE brown/cream livery, waiting time at Sheffield for the next departure to Cleethorpes on 8/Apr/1984. Robert Chilton.
In the late 1960s, a power-twin in mixed liveries is seen approaching Leeds City from the ex-Midland Woodlesford/Normanton route. The BR logo on the driver's door suggests the blue car had previously carried the early livery with small yellow ends. First class totems are visible in the windows of the saloon nearest the camera, but no yellow stripe is applied. Graeme Phillips Collection.
On 31/05/1977, a 3-car unit is seen leaving Manors for the coast. Nearest the camera at the rear is a Class 108 DMS(L), whilst the other two vehicles are Class 101. The black across the top is a bridge over the railway. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Tyseley depot's set T052, formed as a hybrid unit with class 116 53060 and class 101 53321, seen by peering over one of the footbridge windowsills at Derby on 17/Jul/1992. 158 780 stands alongside with a Nottingham service. Robert Chilton.
Tyseley depot's set T052, formed as a hybrid unit with class 116 53060 and class 101 53321 waits at Derby on 17/Jul/1992 with a Crewe service, with 158 780 alongside on a Nottingham service. Robert Chilton.
Tyseley's set T052 formed as a hybrid with class 101 53321 and out of sight class 116 53060, at Derby on 17/Jul/1992. 53321 still has it's former Norwich set number 104 and there is a patch between the centre and second man's cab windows where there was previously a mounting for an East Suffolk line RETB aerial. Robert Chilton.
51566 with 53933 as Tyseley's set T072 stands at a busy Derby station on 17/Jul/1992. The set number is somewhat cobbled together with numerals of differing colours and 51566 still retains it's Welsh Dragon and headlight from it's time on the Central Wales Line. This set is one of several class 108s which entered preservation as a complete set, initially in this case at Peak Rail. Robert Chilton.
Class 101 53168 with class 116 51129 as Tyseley's hybrid set T056 stands at Derby station on the morning of 16/Jul/1992. The nearest vehicle is another which has recently been transferred, this time still retaining it's former Norwich depot set number (102) and RETB aerial from working on the East Suffolk line. Robert Chilton.
On 12/10/1978, a Metro-Cammell unit is seen departing from Hull with 1417 to Leeds. Graeme Phillips Collection.
On 14/02/1976, two Class 105s lead a Class 116 over Welwyn Viaduct, Hertfordshire Graeme Phillips Collection.
An impressive 10-car DMU rake led by MetroTrain branded 53610 and 54199, followed by a plain blue class 105 pair and three more two-car class 108 sets heads for York at Kirkham Abbey on 27/Jul/1986. Robert Chilton.
When the Class 127 DMUs finally bowed out of the St. Pancras - Bedford services, 22 power cars were resurrected from store at Carlisle Upperby (one of them, the pioneer 51591, was re-claimed from the NRM) and converted for parcels use. They were formed into 11 two car sets and allocated to Longsight in Manchester. Here set 918 with 55978 at the rear of 55968 is being led by set 912 (55972 & 55982) at Stafford, 20/Aug/1988. Robert Chilton.
Taken near Gilberdyke from a DMU heading for Hull, the Eastern Region general manager's inspection saloon "The Stourton Saloon" headed by DB975637 with DB975664 behind passes the other way on 18/Jun/1988. These two vehicles were converted from Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. class 100 DMUs 56300 (DTCL) and 51122 (DMBS) respectively. They were taken into departmental stock in 1978 and withdrawn in 1990, being scrapped at Snailwell in Cambridgeshire. Robert Chilton.
The very rare sight of a DMU (classes 114 & 105) on a Liverpool Street - Cambridge service: E50003, E56014, E56114 and E51294 head the 12.05 Liverpool Street - Cambridge at Hackney Downs presumably due to shortage of loco or stock. The same unit worked Up on the 09.27 Cambridge - Liverpool Street and it wasn't doing too badly at only 8 minutes late! 16/Oct/1980. Robert Chilton.
