When this picture of class 117 T307 (51370 + 59522 + 51412) approaching Cosford station on the Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury line was taken on 29 November 1990 class 150 Sprinters were beginning to make their presence felt across the West Midlands. At the same time class 20s on MGRs serving Ironbridge Power Station were in the process of being replaced with class 58s and it was to record both types of train that I went onto this line on several occasions. It's not hard to work out where the DMU was going having left Wolverhampton a bit earlier in the morning. Peter Tandy.

Class 117 T307 (51412 + 59522 + 51370) as it paused at the completely wood-built Cosford station on 29 November 1990 with a Wolverhampton to Chester service on 29 November 1990. This station was largely built to accommodate servicemen and women based at the RAF station here. Little RAF flight activity uses the place now but it is a major training service and the home of a truly outstanding RAF museum hosting many attractions and an annual airshow. Peter Tandy.

2nd July 1988

51413

A Tyseley allocated Pressed Steel built Class 117 3-car Suburban DMU formed of cars 51413, 59509 and 51371, was passing under Watkin Lane bridge as it arrived at Lostock Hall with a Preston to Carlisle 'Dalesrail' service on July 2nd 1988. Complete with its Tyseley TS308 board in the offside cab window, the set was on temporary loan to Newton Heath during the period when the class 142 Pacer fleet was in a state of flux due to ongoing reliability issues, and before new class 150/2 Sprinters had arrived in sufficent quantities. This particular set was the last Class 117 to remain in operation on the national network, and following withdrawal in 1996, the driving cars were eventually converted as water jetting vehicles for use with Chiltern Railways and returned to BR green livery. They were finally withdrawn in 2015, and both cars have survived into preservation. Martyn Hilbert.

An added bonus for the photographer visiting Cosford was the presence of conveniently placed semaphore signals. It was a shame that the majority of the GWR-style lower quadrants had been replaced by the time I was going here but they were still better than the modern alternative. On 29 November 1990 class 117 DMU T308 (51371 + 59509 + 51413) was pictured about to stop with a Chester to Wolverhampton service. Neither of the loops here were much used at this time and I was never fortunate enough to take pictures with the appropriate signals in the "off" position. Peter Tandy.
