On 13 July 1981, this pair of Derby Suburban class 116 DMUs were seen at Stratforrd-upon-Avon under the GWR footbridge. The trains are in "blue band" livery with West Midlands PTE logos. Jeremy Chapter.

Three first-generation diesel multiple units (116s and a 101) stand in the platforms at Birmingham Moor Street on July 23, 1981 , at the time a terminus. The destination blind on the right-hand unit reads "LEICESTER" which is a bit of a conundrum. A fine Rail Alphabet running-in board and two platform signs grace the platform. Jeremy Chapter.

One of Tyseley's class 116 dmu's wanders along towards University station with the 12.50 Four Oaks - Longbridge service on 10 December 1981. The photograph is at the University of Birmingham and the canal is in the deep sandstone cutting that was hewn out with just picks and shovels when this canal was built. When the water is low it is possible to stand in the canal on little islands of sandstone next to the towpath. Geoff Dowling.

"This was taken on Saturday December 12 1981 after the record coldest night when the temperature was around minus 22 degrees. I spent most of the morning at this spot in the 'dip' between Warwick and Leamington Spa, and this was the only train I saw! It is going towards Leamington Spa - I was too cold to get the unit number (it was minus 20 when I took the pic)." Mel Holley.
