One of Tyseley's re-liveried Derby class 116 sets approaches Sutton Coldfield station with a Redditch - Four Oaks service. Next to the box is a signal repeater, the station is on a very tight curve and the driver cannot see the next signal on his approach, tucked under the box steps is the signallers new moped. The scene has changed completely since the electrification of the Cross-City line. 11/10/1980. Geoff Dowling.

The morning of 17th February 1981 revealed heavy snow had fallen. In this picture at Kings Norton a Tyseley class 116 DMU is struggling towards Longbridge, wrong line, I am guessing the direction of travel by the tail light!. The Camp Hill lines (left) remain buried under snow and clearly have yet to see a train. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
Winter at Gravelly Hill. A first generation Class 116 dmu creeps into Gravelly Hill station, Birmingham, with a Four Oaks - Longbridge service on Sunday 22nd February 1981. For one academic year I travelled frequently by train between here and New Street station. My freezing cold, lonely student digs were just around the corner in Gravelly Hill North. Today, the "cross-city" line is electrified, and trains run between Lichfield and Longbridge, or between Four Oaks and Redditch. It wasn't until I'd viewed the scan large that I noticed the figures up there behind the bridge parapet. Brrrr! Tom Harper.
Suburban snow scene. The shutter speed I'd selected wasn't quite fast enough to stop this first generation dmu as it burst out from under the bridge here at Kings Norton station. The unit was working the 14:02 Lichfield - Longbridge cross city line service on Wednesday 25th February 1981. Meanwhile, a West Midlands PTE Leyland National bus crosses the bridge. Tom Harper.
A Class 116 DMU at Derby on Thursday 12 March 1981. David Russon.
Leicester Midland, 25th May 1981. Another grey rainy day in the city. A Class 116 diesel multiple unit enters Leicester Midland from the north past Leicester North signal box and a forest of semaphore signals. This could be my train, the 08.00 train to Nuneaton. In 1981 The Leicester Gap was in full swing and multiple aspect colour light signals wouldn't replace the mechanical signals until 1986-7. In the right distance is Leicester depot with what look like mainly Class 25 diesels on shed. Pete LG99.

On 13 July 1981, this pair of Derby Suburban class 116 DMUs were seen at Stratforrd-upon-Avon under the GWR footbridge. The trains are in "blue band" livery with West Midlands PTE logos. Jeremy Chapter.
Despite the destination blind reading Stratford upon Avon this rake of class 116 coaches was bound for Birmingham Moor Street when photographed on 16 July 1981 at Wilmcote station, Jeremy Chapter.
