The driver of this Sudbury bound class 104 DMU at Chappel & Wakes Colne on 7th June 1980 seems to be making a rude gesture at the photographer as he arrives at Chapel & Wakes Colne on 7th June 1980! E50596 presumably leads. Bob Belcher.

A five-car BRCW Class 104 DMU, with what appears to be Driving Motor Composite Lavatory (DMCL) M50483 leading, was stood at Burscough Bridge with a Manchester Victoria to Southport service on June 21st 1980. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

28th June 1980

The guard was looking back, as a well filled six-car Class 104 DMU, with Driving Motor Brake Second M50475 at the rear, was stood at Salwick with the 16.45 Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on June 28th 1980. The single island platform still retained its L&Y platform canopy in faded 1950's BR maroon & cream paint. The platform buildings at Salwick were demolished in the early 1970's, but the canopy remained until around 1990, and inevitably has since been replaced by a small shelter. Long grass had reclaimed where there was once a well-kept station garden. To the left of the DMU is the site of the former fast lines, removed in 1966. Martyn Hilbert.

With the now-demolished toffee factory on Virginia Street as a backdrop and with almost new Class 507's stabled in the sidings, a six-car Class 104 DMU with DMBS M50451 leading, was approaching journeys end at Southport with an evening service from Manchester Victoria on July 5th 1980. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

2nd August 1980

The view through bridge 26 looking towards Kirkham North Junction as a 6-Car Class 104 formation takes the station avoiding line with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on Saturday August 2nd 1980. The leading car is M50474 one of the large fleet of 104's then allocated to Newton Heath Depot. This was before the construction of the Kirkham by-pass which now crosses the line adjacent to the signalbox. The Coast Line to Blackpool South can be seen diverging away on the left, whilst behind the outer home signal on the Blackpool bound line is one of the brick piers that once carried the flyover that took trains from the Marton Direct Line (From Blackpool Central) over the Blackpool North route, the ramp onto the up direction station avoiding line being at the West side of the signalbox. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

2nd August 1980

A view along the District Civil Engineers sidings at Kirkham North Junction through the cast-iron span of bridge 26, as a 2-Car Class 104 DMU formed of cars M50449 & M50535 comes off the Ribby Curve and the end of the Coast Line with the 12.01 Blackpool South to Kirkham & Wesham on August 2nd 1980. These were the days when the core daytime service on the Blackpool South line ran to and from Kirkham only, utilising a reversing siding at the Preston end of Kirkham station. On weekday mornings a through service ran to Manchester Victoria and a corresponding return service ran in the evening, the unit stabling overnight at Blackpool South, the route then was still double track and South station had two platform roads. In the 1970's the through Manchester train was often formed of a Class 124 Transpennine DMU set. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

6th September 1980

Set: 54

This four-car dmu formation on September 6, 1980 is headed by a Class 104 Birmingham RC&W Co driving trailer. I think I can identify this as E56187. It carries a Norwich set identity (54) and its partner is a class 105 Cravens vehicle, a 114 is on the back. The train is headed for Doncaster via Spalding, hence the train is crossing off the main (Peterborough) line into a branch platform. It probably originated at Great Yarmouth. This route closed in 1982. The large Whitemoor yard can be seen behind March North Junction signalbox. Jeremy Chapter.
