Back in 1983, electrification towards Cambridge only extended to Royston on the GN route and to Bishop's Stortford on the GE. The King's Cross line had lost its through services and a dmu shuttle was provided from Royston to Cambridge. Refurbished Metro-Cammell sets were used for many years and these retained First Class accommodation. E51442 came from the NER in 1977 and spent 10 years allocated to Cambridge, here partnering E56402 it has arrived on the 10.20 from Cambridge and is awaiting passengers off the 09.40 from King's Cross. 19th February 1983. E50225 and E56388 pass Bensham, Gateshead with a service from the Tyne Valley line heading into Newcastle on 05/03/1983. They are about to head into a tunnel under the East Coast Main Line. In a scene barely recognisable as the same today, Metropolitan-Cammell Class 101 unit 50157 + 56071, forming a Bishop Auckland to Saltburn service, passes the soon to be barren waste ground of the former Teesside Works Lackenby blast furnaces at Grangetown on 17th March 1983. The South Bank coke ovens are just out of view to the left and the converter at the Lackenby plant, under demolition in 2022, is to be seen above the railway as it curves away to the left.
