7th May 1983
With a red flag 'planted' between the rails as protection, the Derby Lightweight RTC Ultrasonic Test Train formed of cars DB975008 & DB975007 was stabled in the sidings at Dock Street, Preston on May 7th 1983. The unique vintage DMU was replaced by a heavily modified Metro-Cammell DMU (901001) in 1986, and subsequently the last surviving original Derby Lightweight two-car set fortunately passed into preservation. A Class 104 BRCW twin approaches Preston with the empty stock of the 15:38 Preston to Ormskirk service on Friday 3rd June 1983. The leading vehicle is M53428 is a Driving Motor Brake 2nd originally numbered M50428 but renumbered into the M53xxx series to avoid duplication of numbers. Ormskirk had once been an intermediate station on the main line from Liverpool Exchange to Preston and the north. Electric services were extended from Liverpool as far as Ormskirk in 1913. However, following the re-routing of all long distance services to and from the north into Lime Street, an enforced change of trains at Ormskirk became the norm. Brian McDevitt.

Platforms 2 and 3 of Preston railway station, viewed looking south from the footbridge, at 17:05 on Friday 12 August 1983. The DMU is formed of a two-car Class 108 and another two-car with the roof vents removed, probably a Class 104. Ian 10B.

M52040 in the process of being broken up at Ladywell, Preston, on 25 March 1984. The vehicle had suffered fire damage at Preston in the early hours on 7 March 1984 while en-route empty from Blackburn. The contractor that cut the remains is believed to be Banks Street Metals of Glossop. Andrew Bond.

A class 108 DMU set led by car M52041 awaits departure from platform 2 at Preston with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on the 22nd October 1984. This car continued in service until November 1992 and was scrapped two months later. An exposure of 11 seconds at f8 was used. S Gaskell.
