The final 100/105 hybrid set 53355 / 53812 leaving Preston in 1986. The top marker lamp appears to have a red bulb in it, and a Class 127 parcels set is on the right. Gery Miller.

24th January 1986

Looking rather sorry for its self with the driving end sheeted over, Class 104 Driving Motor Second Lavatory M53482 was awaiting its fate in one of the sidings at Dock Street, adjacent to the BR Preston Divisional office block (Ladywell House) on January 24th 1986. M53482 had been paired with car M53433, and on the 18th January 1986 the DMU was involved in a head-on collision at Preston, when on a returning football excursion from Carlisle to Accrington, the unit suffered brake failure and collided with Class 47 47111. No one was killed, but 44 passengers were injured. The car lanquished at Preston for some considerable time awaiting the outcome of the subsequent enquiry into the incident, and was later scrapped where it stood. Martyn Hilbert.

With the 309ft high spire of St Walburges Church as a backdrop, a six-car lash-up of Derby Class 108 DMU's were stabled in Croft Street Sidings, adjacent to the Preston PSB and Fylde Junction on February 22nd 1986. The nearest set was formed of cars 53968 & 54251 which at the time were allocated to Carlisle Kingmoor Depot. Martyn Hilbert.

Set: 920

Former Bedford-St Pancras Class 127 Driving cars now with roller shutter doors as M55966 + M55967. The unit was stabled at Croft Street Sidings adjacent to the Preston Power Box on March 2nd 1986. One of 11 similar units converted, Set 920 was finished in retro BR Green livery. The nearest car in this view had been turned-out in green for its last period of passenger service when allocated to Cricklewood Depot. The unit was adorned with a plaque commemorating "The First Unit, 1,250,000 miles, Bedford-St Pancras". Following replacement by new Class 317 EMU's, car M51591 was selected for the National Collection at York, but when BR were short of one car to complete the 11 Parcel Units, the NRM handed the car back for conversion. As a consolation the finished unit (920) was finished in BR Green. Martyn Hilbert.

Set: 910

Ex Class 127 Parcels/Newspaper DMU formed of cars M55970 + M55980 (910) was stabled between duties at Croft Street Sidings at Preston on March 23rd 1986. Eleven of these two-car DMU's fitted with roller shutter doors had been converted from former Bedford - St Pancras Class 127 Driving Cars in 1985. They were all withdrawn in 1989. Martyn Hilbert.

A line up of stabled DMU's at Croft Street Sidings, adjacent to Preston Power Box on March 23rd 1986. Left to right, a BRCW Class 104 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M53466 was a the head of a four-car rake of 104's. Next to it was a Class 108 with DTSL M54256 against the block with Cravens Class 105 M53812 alongside. Just visible on the extreme right is ex Class 127 car M55970 in use as a parcels/mail/newspapers unit fitted with roller shutter doors. Despite appearances this was a shot over a low wire fence. Set: 910

Stood alongside milepost 0 on what was the old Preston & Lancaster route, a former Bedford - St Pancras Class 127 Diesel-Hydraulic DMU, converted to a Parcels Unit complete with roller-shutter doors, was stabled for the weekend in Croft Street Sidings adjacent to Preston PSB on March 23rd 1986. Formed of cars 55980 & 55970 (Set 910), the pair was one of 11 similar units that had been formed/converted in 1985. Martyn Hilbert.

A gathering of First Generation DMU's at Croft Street Sidings at Preston on March 23rd 1986. Surrounded by Class 104's (left), 108s (behind) and Class 127's (right), the Cravens/Gloucester Class 105/100 hybrid two-car set formed of cars M53812 & M53355 had been working Preston to Ormskirk services the previous day. The odd couple had been formed when the pair of cars were the last operational examples of their respective types that were asbestos free. When finally withdrawn from service in 1989, the unit was stored at Crewe South pending a move to the NRM, but was damaged beyond economic repair in a vandalism attack. The unit was subsequently scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.

Set: 914

Former Bedford-St Pancras Class 127 DMU cars, converted for parcels use with roller shutter doors and numbered M55984 & M55974 (914), were stabled at Croft Street Sidings adjacent to Fylde Junction and the Preston PSB on March 30th 1986. There had been 11 x 2-car parcel units formed in 1985 (sets 910-920) utilising redundant and modified Class 127 DMBS vehicles. Martyn Hilbert.

A two-car Swindon 'Cross Country' Class 120 DMU formed of Driving Motor Brake Seconds M51580 & M51574 back-to-back, was stabled in Croft Street Sidings adjacent to the Preston PSB on Sunday September 7th 1986. The unit spent its final period of operation in use as a mail/parcels set. Martyn Hilbert.

A two-car Metro-Cammell Class 101 DMU formed of cars M54351 & M51177 were stabled with other first generation DMU's in Croft Street Sidings at Preston on October 12th 1986. Martyn Hilbert.

Complete with Red Star Parcels logos, A hybrid Class 120/116 two-car parcels unit formed of Driving Motor Brake Seconds M51786 (120) and M53051 (116), was stabled in Croft Street Sidings at Preston on October 12th 1986. With the seats removed, the odd couple had been formed in the early part of 1986 for mail and parcels use. Martyn Hilbert.

With the spire of St Walburges Church in the background, a Class 120/116 2-Car Parcels Unit (51786 & 53051) was stabled at Croft Street Sidings with other DMU's on October 26th 1986. The set was eventually withdrawn from service in September 1987. Martyn Hilbert.

Having been used on a service to Blackpool South, Class 104, M53493 was stabled with several other sets of first generation DMU's at Croft Street Sidings, adjacent to Preston power box on November 29th 1986. The sidings and power box are situated on the site of the former Preston MPd that closed in 1961 following a roof fire in 1960. Dominating the skyline is St Walburges Church dating frpm 1854 and designed by Joseph Hansom of Hansom Cab fame, it has the tallest parish church spire in England at 309ft. Martyn Hilbert.

Set: EP527

Downgraded to Parcels & Mail work, a Swindon Cross-Country Class 120 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M53703 was the filling on a Class 142 sandwich, stabled in Croft Street Sidings at Preston on November 30th 1986. The 120 had formerly been part of Derby Etches Park Depot set EP527, but had been converted for parcels/mail duties in the Summer of 1986. M53703 was withdrawn from service at Chester in June 1988 and scrapped by Berry's of Leicester in 1989. To the left of this view was Provincial liveried 142035 whilst just visible on the right was 142055. Martyn Hilbert.

55966 & 55967 at Preston at 11.20pm on 30/03/1987 about to head south on a parcels service Deane Baker.

3rd May 1987

Complete with a discoloured white cab roof, two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU, formed of Driving Motor Brake Second M53431 & Driving Motor Lavatory Second M53512 was stabled between duties in Croft Street Sidings adjacent to Preston Power Box on May 3rd 1987. The well-worn unit was having an extended period of operation due to the sidelining of the then ailing almost new Class 142 Pacer fleet. The unit would become a spare set at Chester Depot in November 1989 due its poor condition until it was officially withdrawn in June 1990, as new Class 150/2 Sprinters began to appear in quantity from BREL York. 3rd May 1987

The rare appearance of a Class 114 'Derby Heavyweight' two-car DMU, formed of cars E54027 & E53019, stabled in Croft Street Sidings at Preston on May 3rd 1987. The following day it worked a Blackpool North - Manchester Victoria service. This was the period when faults on relatively new Class 142's were causing the cobbling together/transfer and reinstatement of first generation DMU sets, prior to the introduction of Class 150/2 Sprinters in sufficient quantities.
