23/07/1977: Class 108 E50601 E56192 are seen heading out of Newcastle. Does anyone know the history of this unit operating in the north-east? Was it a demonstrator for the refurbishment programme? There are plenty of photos showing unrefurbished Class 108s in the area in blue livery up to around 1977, but this is the only example I've seen in Refurbished livery, as if they were transferred away at refurbishment. Unrefurbished Class 104s and 105s seemed to appear at around the same time as replacements - was the north-east treat like the poor relation and sent tatty units while Yorkshire got the refurbished ones? Graeme Phillips Collection.
A Met-Camm Class 101 twin departs from Newcastle Central 17 September 1977, many more of the same type can be seen in the platforms. Phil Bevan.
Newcastle Station - East end Concourse, on 21/01/1978. This was the Saturday prior to withdrawal of BR services between Manors and West Monkseaton via Benton. There appears to be some kind of electronic information boards, although not for platform 2. The paper notice stands are presumably about arrangements for replacement bus services. A Class 104, typical traction at the time, is behind the red ticket inspector's kiosk, several 101s are to the right. Graeme Phillips Collection.

A Class 101 DMU at Newcastle, 19/04/1980. DMBS E51209 is nearest the camera, the furthest car seems to be still in plain blue livery. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Illustrating a mix of liveries at Newcastle on 7/6/80, nearest the camera is DMBS E50165, still unrefurbished and retaining overall BR blue livery, paired with DTS(L) E56061 in DMU refurbished livery of white with blue band. By this date, refurbished livery had been abandoned for further refurbishments, which were being out-shopped in blue + grey instead. The latter car would have previously been a DTC(L) but the first class compartment has evidently been declassified as there is no yellow band at cantrail level. Graeme Phillips Collection.

E50170 displays Ripon on its destination blind when seen at Newcastle on April 2, 1981, 14 years after closure. Perhaps an April Fools from the day before? It was working the 18:12 Newcastle - Darlington via Hartlepool. John Carter.
