Class 108 vehicles 53953 and 54242 depart Newcastle for a trip up the ECML with the 17:45 to Morpeth on Wednesday 23/8/89. In the background, platform construction work is underway, including the outer island platform, which was initially numbered 15 and 16 when opened for local services in 1989. All the platforms were renumbered soon afterwards, the outer island becoming platforms 5, 6, 7 and 8, and the platform from which this photograph was taken renumbered from 8 to 2. Graeme Phillips.

Newcastle Central station pilot locomotive, class 03 No.03063, is captured framed between 'Peak' 45139 and Metro-Cammell DMU No.E53156 on 23rd May 1985. The class 03 was delivered new as D2063 on 14th July 1959 to York (50A) depot and subsequently worked from Stourton, Bradford Hammerton Street, York, Hull Botanic Gardens and Gateshead depots during its career. It was withdrawn on 26th November 1987 and is now preserved on the North Norfolk Railway. Gordon Edgar.
My only visit to Newcastle Central was on 11-04-1987 - and the weather was wet and dark. However these views record the station in the immediate pre-electrification era. A Class 101 heads away from the station an passes a new unit on its way in. Gordon Thomson.
