Class 111 DMU at Ilkley

June 1989

Class 111 DHS no. E78713 is seen at Ilkley awaiting departure with the 1514 service to Leeds, in June 1989. This relatively early vehicle was originally 50272 then 53272, before undergoing conversion to 78713 by removal of one of its Rolls Royce engines in 1983. It was withdrawn only a few months after this slide, in October 1989. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Date: 28th April 1987

With West Yorkshire PTE 'Metro Train' branding, a two-car Class 111 DMU formed of cars E78971 & E78713 was passing Lostock Hall with a Preston to Leeds service on April 28th 1987. The pair of cars were renumbered in the 78xxx series following conversion to single engine cars in the mid 1980's. Visible on the left is the former Lostock Hall MPD, then still in use for wagon repairs. Martyn Hilbert.

A Metropolitan-Cammell 2-car set with E78713 on the rear arrives at Barnetby on 13th May 1988. 20100 can just be discerned behind the signalbox heading up the hill light engine. Note at this date only the three-doll bracket signal exists. The two separate home signals were presumably added at a later date. Syd Young.
