Cars E54365 E53164 are just about to enter Boldon Colliery station, Tyne & Wear, with the 07:39 Middlesbrough-Newcastle on 19/07/1983. Behind the train is a bridge carrying the line from Tyne Dock to Consett, which crossed the Newcastle-Sunderland line at what was known as Pontop Crossing - in this view, it is still protected by semaphore signals, but these were replaced in the mid-1980s. Boldon Colliery station was renamed Brockley Whins in 1991, and it became part of the Tyne & Wear Metro system when the Sunderland extension was opened in 2002. Graeme Phillips Collection.

A Class 101 2-car set with E54383 leading (recently renumbered from E56383) waits under the NER footbridge at Cottingham with a service from Bridlington to Hull on 29th July 1983. On the left, a Class 108 set departs for Beverley. Cottingham station has changed little since this photo was taken; the old footbridge still creaks under the weight of passing feet, but the 1st generation DMUs which served the line for 30-odd years are long gone. A Class 101 at Hartlepool, 30/07/1983. Nearest the camera is DTS(L) E54219 in the southern / eastern bay platform awaiting departure with the 12:54 Hartlepool - Darlington.
