January 1984
At Springs Branch on the left the distinctive Class 103 design of sandite vehicle 977047 can be seen, while on the right 40001 is at the far end of the former steam shed buffered with another class 40. A smart looking 08688 with gold painted numbers on the buffer beam takes centre stage. January 1984 S Gaskell.
24th June 1984
My usual route into Wigan along the towpath of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal took me out of the countryside and through a grim area of factories and derelict warehouses. Approaching the town on the 24th June 1984 I paused to capture a train of four class 108 DMU cars rattling its way between Wigan and Southport. S Gaskell.
12th August 1984
Following withdrawal from passenger use, Redundant Park Royal Class 103 Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory Car M56156 was converted to a Sandite Coach and renumbered ADB977047. The non-powered car was stabled at Wigan Springs Branch on August 12th 1984. There were 20, two-car Park Royal DMU sets introduced in 1957, they had been built in the Crossley Motors factory at Heaton Chapel, Stockport. The last units were withdrawn from passenger service in 1983. Martyn Hilbert.

A dull, grey and wet morning on platform 2 at Wigan Wallgate sees Class 104 53535 at the front of the 10.00 departure for Kirkby. This 1958 vintage car was by then showing its age but it lasted in service until February 1986, before being scrapped almost immediately. 20th October 1984. S Gaskell.

My train home, the 14.00 departure from Wigan Wallgate which I'd take to Appley Bridge. This was the 10.39 York to Southport service and was worked by a Neville Hill Class 108 set including car 53599. 20th October 1984. S Gaskell.
December 1984
Wigan North Western was home to three pairs of Class 108 DMUs on this bright winter's day in December 1984. The 4-car set in platform 4 is likely to be the 11.35 Blackpool North to Liverpool Lime Street service, due to leave Wigan at 12.22, while the 2-car set in platform 3 would form the next Liverpool service an hour later. A close up of the bodyside number on M53467 shows evidence of its renumbering from M50467 in July 1983. I had ridden on this 2-car set during a visit to Manchester on 28th January 1984. Taken at Springs Branch in June 1985. S Gaskell.

Displaying the headcode 6Z08, Ultrasonic Test Train DB975007 - DB975008 arrives at the south end of platform 6 at Wigan North Western, 6th July 1985. Built in 1955 the unit had been converted to departmental use 15 years earlier and would eventually be secured for preservation after final withdrawal in 1994. S Gaskell.

A Chester allocated 5-car Class 101 DMU rattles through platform 5 at Wigan North Western with what was probably an empty stock working on the 13th July 1985. DMBS 53310 is at the front followed by 59128 then 53326. The rear pair consists of 51188 with 54348. S Gaskell.
2nd November 1985
In a sorry state, former Park Royal Class 103 Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) ADB977047 (M56156) was awaiting disposal at the side of Wigan Springs Branch TMD on November 2nd 1985. The DMU car had been converted into a Sandite Car following withdrawal from passenger use in 1981. The DMU car was buffered-up to a withdrawn Springs Branch breakdown train riding van, ADM395753. A Class 108 DMU in Wigan Wallgate station circa spring 1986. The DMBS closest seems to be 53629 judging by the remnants of the vehicle number written on the front. It was a Newton Heath vehicle until the May timetable change that year when it moved to Tyseley. Brian Ward.

A Class 101 DMU in Wigan Wallgate station on 27 February 1986. The closest vehicle is noted as 51503 which was allocated to Neville Hill and it displays Southport on the distination blind. Stuart Mackay Collection.

On Saturday August 16th 1986 Lincoln's 54133+51271 were working services out of Manchester Victoria. Here they stand at Wigan Wallgate with a Manchester Victoria-Southport via Atherton service. Ian Hazlehurst.

With the WCML in the background and the route to Southport in the foreground, Class 108 DMU sets were Sunday resting in the Up sidings adjacent to Wigan Wallgate Junction on November 2nd 1986. Complete with a Greater Manchester PTE emblem behind the cab door the nearest car was DMSL 54232. An image taken in more-relaxed BR days when a polite request to local P.Way staff gave access to such locations. Martyn Hilbert.

Stabled on oil soaked trackwork, a Derby Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars M53987 & M54270 were stabled with other DMUs in the Up Sidings at Wigan Wallgate on November 2nd 1986. A shot obtained in more-relaxed BR days when the local P.Way gang let me though a trackside access gate. Martyn Hilbert.
