599.  GENERAL MATTERS OF POLICY  (Cont'd)

(1)  Programme of Diesel Multiple Unit operation  (Contd.)

It was noted that it may be necessary to increase the number of vehicles for the Marylebone suburban scheme to more that 60.

(2)  Review of Schemes in operation or projected

Commission request of June 13th for all diesel multiple unit services, in operation or projected, to be reviewed and, where losses are heavy and the prospect of improvement slight, to determine whether their continuance or introduction is really necessary.

On August 1st the Commisssion requested the information by October 1st and it was noted that the departments concerned had the matter actively in hand and a report would be submitted in September.

Consideration was being specially given to the following lines :-

Amlwch Branch
Watford - St.Albans
Harrow - Belmont
Ramsbottom - Bacup
West Cumberland

(3)  Allocation of Units being built at Derby and by Contractors

Revised schedule of allocation attached as Appendix "B".

It was noted that the date of delivery of twelve 2-car sets for Manchester Part 2 scheme had been amended from February/March, 1959, to June/August, 1959; Mr.Stanley said that as a result of the decision to take the order for W.R. vehicles away from Derby Works, it might be possible to bring forward the delivery of the vehicles for Manchester Part 2 scheme, and he would look into this.

(Mr.Stanley subsequently reported that it is not possible to bring forward the delivery of these vehicles from June/August, 1959.)

(4)  Diesel Costings - Back checking. Bury-Bacup Branch

Noted that this investigation was progressing satisfactorily.
