571.  GENERAL MATTERS OF POLICY  (Cont'd)

3.  Proposed use of 238 H.P. Rolls Royce engines

Noted that a further meeting with the B.T.C. technical officers was held on the 12th March when it was decided to recommend that the motor cars for the 50 sets for working Central Division services should be vehicles of an existing design each fitted with one 238 H.P. Rolls Royce engine.  Half of the power equipments will be fitted with gear box transmission and half with torque converter transmission, thus enabling reliable data to be compiled on the two types of transmission.  This recommendation is on the strict understanding that it is found practicable for the Rolls Royce engined units, whether fitted with gear box transmission or torque converter transmission, to be coupled with other types of standard units now in operation fitted with B.U.T. power equipment.

With regard to the St.Pancras suburban scheme, it was agreed that the scheme be prepared on the basis of the use of 238 H.P. Rolls Royce engines.

In respect of inter-city trains, it was noted that the experiment which had been made with the Davey Paxman 450 H.P. engine had proven satisfactory but it was felt that as it had already been agreed that to adopt 238 H.P. Rolls Royce and 230 H.P. B.U.T. engines, no further action should be taken as regards the use of the Davey Paxman engine.  It was decided that future inter-city schemes would be developed on the use of 238 H.P. Rolls Royce engines or suitable B.U.T. type.

Proposals on standardisation of underfloor power equipment for diesel multiple units have been approved by the Modernisation Committee of the General Staff and particulars are shown on Appendix "B" attached.
