555  SCHEMES AUTHORISED BUT NOT YET IN OPERATION

1.  Manchester (Part 1) Scheme (Certain services not yet in operation)

Noted that it is anticipated this scheme will be completed by February 3rd, 1958, except for certain heavily loaded trains which require to be steam operated.  On completion there will be a surplus of 22 2-car units and a deficit of 4 3-car units, with a possible further surplus on electrification.

2.  Derby, Nottingham, Leicester Part 1 Scheme

Scheme will be commenced on 14th April, 1958. Units now being delivered and being temporarily utilised in Manchester area. (See Minute 554(a) re maintenance).

556   SCHEMES UNDER CONSIDERATION BY COMMITTEE BUT NOT YET SUBMITTED TO B.T.C.

1.  North Wales Part 3 {Wrexham, Chester and New Brighton)

Preliminary report already considered and scheme being re-examined.

2.  Liverpool Lime Street - St.Helens - Wigan

Preliminary report already considered. Scheme has been re-costed on the alternatives of 2 x 150 H.P. B.U.T. engines and 1 x 238 H.P. Rolls Royce engine per power car.

Agreed scheme be re-submitted on the basis of the use of 238 H.P. Rolls Royce engine.

3.  Birmingham Part 2 Scheme

Units now in course of delivery and being temporarily utilised in other schemes.  Departmental submission now awaited and Mr. Gould said the urgency of this is appreciated, and will be expedited.

4.  Manchester Part 2 Scheme (S.E.Lancs.)

Noted that scheme has now been approved by Area Board and submitted to B.T.C. for authority.  26 MC + MC units required for this scheme.  14 (MC + MC) units are on order from Cravens and B.T.C. have agreed that remaining 12 (MC + MC) units be built at Derby.  Consideration to be given to the use of the five Derby built (MC + MC) units which will not couple to the vehicles now being built.
