450   SCHEMES UNDER CONSIDERATION BY COMMITTEE BUT NOT YET SUBMITTED TO B.T.C.

1.  Liverpool Lime St. - St.Helens - Wigan.

Mr. Read stated that the conversion of the line to operation by diesel units is unlikely to make it remunerative. The Chairman requested that the scheme be fully prepared on the basis of the working costs being reduced.

Mr. Gould said that the preliminary scheme had been worked out on the basis of the use of all power cars, but if there were no technical objections to the use of units consisting of power car and trailer, costs would be reduced, although it would mean slight reduction in speeds.

Mr. Gould will confer with C.M.& E.E. on this question.

2.  Liverpool Central - Gateacre and Warrington (C).

Mr. Gould said that, following the discussion at the previous meeting, the whole of this scheme is being remodelled.

The Chairman said it was essential that a diesel service be introduced at an early date in view of the potential advantages of this scheme and he asked for the final report to be submitted as a matter of urgency without waiting until the next meeting.

Mr. Varley was requested to deal specially with the question of maintenance at Allerton.
