Piccadilly Parcels. Not the sharpest of images by a long way, but a reasonably interesting one. One of the four LMR Gloucester Class 128 Motor Parcels Vans, M55990, trundles out of Manchester Piccadilly on 21st April 1979. It was withdrawn from service almost exactly three years later. Syd Young.

March 1971. Half a century ago I persuaded my dad to lend me his Practika camera and I took my first two railway photographs. I don't know the exact date, but I recall it was just before my twelfth birthday. I'd been a "spotter" for a few years and although I had an Instamatic camera, for some reason I hadn't pointed it at trains, apart from an attempt at capturing Flying Scotsman in 1968, an abject failure due to forgetting to wind on the film. On this visit to Botanic Gardens shed in Hull, I decided to give it a go. There are two pairs of green EE Type 2s (Class 20 in new money) along with a mixture of DMUs (Met-Camms and a Trans-Pennine DMC in blue/grey), all of which was regular fare for BG. The locos are stabled on what were once the running lines to Hull docks and the seaside resorts of Hornsea and Withernsea. These lines closed completely in 1965. Syd Young.

On one occasion 55993 led a 10 car summer service to Skegness and was of interest to local enthusiasts and station staff as 128's were not common at this location. The usual array of Tyseley suburban cars reportedly had the DPU added for a large party of disabled persons wheelchairs. On the day they didn't actually turn up or use it. The empty interior is seen here. The set number T003 suggests this was the summer of 1988 as it would be reallocated to Cambridge by the end of the year. Peter Skegness.

Bedford station on 12 October 1996. Class 117 2-car unit L707 (51335/51377) has arrived working the 14.50 from Bletchley while Class 319 184 has arrived on Platform 2 with a service from the south. 51335/51377 were built by Pressed Steel in 1960 and were originally in a 3-car set with trailer 59487. They were allocated to Bletchley depot at the date of my photo, and were withdrawn from that depot in May 1998. Both vehicles were scrapped by Sims Metals in Cardiff. 319 184 was one of the second batch of Class 319s, built in 1990. It was converted to a 319/3 (by the removal of 1st class accommodation) in the period 1997-1999 and, as such, is still in service with Northern Trains. Lewis Bevan.

A visit to Woburn Sands station on 23 April 1996, just in time to see 2 Class 121 single units, 55023/55031, depart with what I recorded as "the 14.00 to Bedford" (ie a Bletchley-Bedford train). Lewis Bevan.

Canonbury station on 14 March 1982. A Cravens Class 105 2-car unit (56455/50362) is just leaving working the 09.00 North Woolwich-Camden Town. I had just alighted from the dmu, having boarded at Stratford. My next train would be a Class 501 emu to take me to Broad Street. Note the poster advertising tickets to Larne for £32 or Belfast for £35. In 2021 Canonbury has 4 platforms, with regular London Overground services on both the North London Line and the East London Line, provided by Class 378 emus. Lewis Bevan.

The passengers on the Poynton Parish Puffa were treated at Stratford-upon-Avon to a visit by the steam locomotive 46229 Duchess of Hamilton on 29 June 1985 although I don't recall taking any pictures of this. The return working of the steam special left a short while before the DMU (BX480, presumably 53474/59152/53420 and BX496, presumably 52062/59155/51947) went back to Cheshire and I photographed the latter from the window of the signal box. The industrial units in the background are the site of the erstwhile Stratford-upon-Avon shed and coaling stage. The entire backdrop is virtually unrecognisable nowadays and the signal box itself was demolished many years ago. Peter Tandy.

Stratford-upon-Avon used to be the destination for many special trains although the number of such workings has lessened in recent years. This picture shows one of these, the Poynton Parish Puffa, standing in the long-gone "cold store" sidings on 29 June 1985. This train was formed of class 108+104 combination (closest being BX496, presumably 51947/59155/52062, the other was BX480, presumably 53420/59152/53474) and, obviously enough I suppose, ran from Poynton in Cheshire, which incidentally is a very attractively decorated station, adorned with many enamel advertisements. Peter Tandy.

This was my first transparency of diesel units and was taken at Leamington Spa on 20 October 1984. The train is the 09.50 Stratford-upon-Avon to Leamington Spa formed of 55009+55012. The leading unit was repainted into the blue and grey carried by 55012 within a few weeks of the date of this photograph. Peter Tandy.

Stratford-upon-Avon used to see a lot of day excursion traffic. This time exposure shows Longsight allocated LO350 (presumably 51935/59388/51927) + LO349 standing in platform 2 awaiting departure time before returning to Blackpool on 3 February 1990. For those interested, the exposure on 100asa transparency film was 12 seconds at f8. I always took several exposures when shooting after dark to try and ensure that there would be at least one with the correct light and shadow balance. It's much easier (and cheaper) with digital hardware! Peter Tandy.
