120 DMU

A Class 120 DMU in Leeds station in November 1985. I am not aware of the Eastern Region ever having had an allocation of Class 120 vehicles, and it is likely this Midland region 2-car unit will have worked in from Derby / Nottingham and is waiting to return there. The class was common at other Eastern region destinations such as Lincoln and Skegness, with inter-regional Provincial services to / from the Midlands, often extending as far as Crewe. They were typically allocated to Etches Park (DY) depot, Derby. Class 114 units were to be found on similar routes, more especially in Eastern counties. Both Classes were largely ousted from these duties from 1986 with the introduction of Class 150/1 Sprinters, with a number of vehicles displaced to Parcels work before final withdrawal. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Class 143 unit 143004 consisted of cars 55645 55670, plus an unidentified Class 101 are seen in what were then platforms 7 and 6 respectively. 143004 was renumbered to 143604 two years later, and platform 7, in which it is standing, became platform 1. Graeme Phillips Collection.

101 DMU

A six-car Class 101 formation is seen with the 'Wear and Wendley Dalesman' railtour at Stanhope on 19/10/1985. It originated at Darlington. This is now part of the Weardale Railway. Graeme Phillips Collection.

114 DMU

A Class 114 DMU at Cleethorpes, c.1976, on what appears to have been a dull day, a Doncaster bound blue liveried unit on the right in platform 2 illustrates the top lamp still in operation. On the left is another Class 114 unit in the refurbished livery. The whole class was allocated to Lincoln at the time, for services radiating from eastern England to destinations in Yorkshire and the East Midlands, down to Peterborough. Graeme Phillips Collection.

116 DMU

Class 116 DMU set C317 (presumably 53911 + 59034 + 53858) in Penarth station in 1987, with red Welsh dragon on the cab front. Graeme Phillips Collection.

100 DMU

A Class 100 DMU in Chester station, May 1981. This cab front (presumably 56105) appears to feature an unusual headlight arrangement, with the headcodes having been plated over and replaced by two central cut-outs - usually, replacement headlights were positioned above the buffers. Graeme Phillips Collection.

A Swindon Trans-Pennine Class 124 departing Hull station on 09/01/1977 with car E51961 nearest the camera. To the right can be seen Metro-Cammell Mk1 Pullman stock in the reverse grey & blue livery they carried in later years. Graeme Phillips Collection.

104 DMU

A Class 104 DMU in Edinburgh Waverley station, June 1978. Although unlikely today, excursions using standard DMUs such as this were not uncommon in the 1970s. This Class 104 was working between Glasgow Queen Street and Whitley Bay. The E-prefix to the number indicates it is probably one of the Class 104s then allocated to South Gosforth (GF) depot for North Tyneside services. Graeme Phillips Collection.

108 DMU

Class 108 DMU at Workington in 1976. A class 40 locomotive is also visible on the right. Graeme Phillips Collection.
