The Regional Railways colour scheme didn't look quite so good in bad weather conditions as in sunshine but any 1st generation unit was a rarity on the Derby To Birmingham line in 1993 so this shot of 117306 formed of 51369 + 59521 + 51411 at Lea Marston on 3 June 1993 was well worth a frame. This was an empty stock working which I assume was on its way from Derby to Tyseley. Peter Tandy.

A view of Tyseley carriage sidings at around 12.30 on 7/7/93. Visible from left to right are : 977752 (ex-51306 - part of former Sandite unit T007), 977842 (ex-55032 - part of the then-current T007), 117 306 (51369/59521/51411) and T317 (51314/59481/51329). T317 was soon to be disbanded but, at this stage, still retained its as-delivered formation, some 33 years after it was put into service. It was also the only complete class 118 still in service. 117 306 would be officially transferred to Haymarket, to see out its last six years of life on the likes of Fife peakhour workings, just two days later. 117306 (51369 + 59521 + 51411) waits in Haymarket depot before heading into Edinburgh Waverley to form an evening rush-hour Fife Circle service. Taken from the driving cab of DMS 51382 in 117313 as it emerges from the carriage-washing plant and proceeds towards the signal on the outgoing road, prior to also working an Fife Circle service on 10th February, 1999. 117306 (51411 closest with 51369) stands on the buffer stops of 'E' road at Aylesbury Depot, being for spares for the Sandite units based there at the time. As can be seen the unit has had it's destination blind box removed and the '6' on the unit number has been patchwork painted. The unit was transferred from Shoeburyness to Aylesbury in one trip, sandwiched between Class 121 units, although 117306 was running too. Taken on 27/09/00, this is reasonably soon after it had moved to Aylesbury. Greg Scott.

Class 117 51369 was cut up at Aylesbury depot by Sims Metals, seen here on 29 May 2002. A piece of body side can be seen, as well as part of the cab front, showing it was once part of set 117306. Roger Marks.

An interesting find at Chiltern's Aylesbury depot on 15th October 2003 was Scotrail branded class 117 Driving Motor Open Second car 51411, latterly from unit 117306, including replacement doors in Network South East livery. Bob Belcher.

DMU set 117 308 (51413 + 59509 + 51371) arriving at Boston with the 08.07 Nottingham to Skegness on 27 July 1991. BR's Regional Railways sector was used to receiving cast offs from elsewhere. With the arrival of Sprinters in the late 1980s on the WR, then Network Turbo sets in the London area from 1990, what had once been a class solely used on WR suburban services, the class 117 DMU sets suddenly started to get transferred to Tyseley Depot in Birmingham from 1987 in increasing numbers. This particular set wasn't a Network South-East cast off, and had previously been Provincial Sector stock allocated to Bristol Bath Road depot with the set number B433. It moved to TS on 10/01/88 as their set T308. As one of a small batch of 117s selected for extended life overhaul, it emerged from works in April 1991 in Regional Railways livery. To differentiate the overhauled sets from the un-refurbished ones, they were given full TOPS class numbers and this one became 117 308. Adrian Nicholls.
