7th April 1988
A Metro-Cammell 2-car set with E78959 leading passes major rebuilding work at Gilberdyke on the evening of 7th April 1988. This was a 2-car set which originally had four engines, now reduced to two. The quadruple track from Gilberdyke Junction to Melton Lane had been reduced to two running lines and the stations along the line were being shaped to fit. At both here and Broomfleet new platforms were being built over the old relief lines. Syd Young.

The first of a set of three pictures of the same Class 111 (78719 + 78969) at Settle Junction taken on 27 July 1988. The train was a Leeds to Morecambe service just after leaving the Settle to Carlisle line and on the "Little North-Western". I have few pictures in this area and made only a few trips around this time with a work colleague with the main aim of photographing steam specials but I'm glad in retrospect that I took advantage of the opportunities to shoot some frames of service trains; to my eyes these are now more interesting. 78709/78959 departs Leeds City station on 22/7/88 forming the slightly-delayed 13.37 to Sheffield. In the background, 51450/51510 departs in parallel with it on the 13.40 to Scunthorpe. Leonard Rogers.

The second of three images at Settle Junction on 27 July 1988, this being in the opposite direction from the first, the Class 111 (78969 + 78919) is on its way to Morecambe. The change in gradient on the Settle to Carlisle main line is very evident and marks the start of The Long Drag north to the summit of the line at Ais Gill. Peter Tandy.
