A Class 110 set at Sheffield, with 52083 closest. Undated, but as the other two vehicles in the set and the Met-Camm alongside are in blue this was probably taken in the late 1960s. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Stabled in what can rather loosely be described as a 'shed' 'Calder Valley' BRCW Class 110 DMU Nos. E52083-E59703-E51814 inside the roofless depot at Bradford Hammerton Street on 10th November 1979. The Class 110 diesel multiple units were built by the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company in conjunction with the Drewry Car Co. to operate services on the former Lancashire and Yorkshire main line, and spent their entire careers based around this same area. This earned them the name of the 'Calder Valley' sets. They were an updated version of the Class 104, with a revised cab design and raised bodyside window frames. Of the depot itself, the former Hammerton Street shed in Bradford closed to steam in 1958 to concentrate on DMU and diesel shunter maintenance and finally closed in 1984 when the remaining class 110 units allocated there were transferred to Neville Hill depot in Leeds. Gordon Edgar.

Following a heavy shower the sun had reappeared as a six-car Calder Valley DMU formation with Driving Motor Composite Lavatory Car E52084 leading, was approaching Preston with a Bradford to Blackpool North service on September 17th 1977. For many years the daily return service between West Yorkshire and Blackpool was the only regular passenger service to travel over the Copy Pit route. The Rolls-Royce engined Class 110 fleet based at Bradford Hammerton Street Depot were subsequently regular visitors to Preston and on busy Summer Saturdays in the early to mid 1970's, a 9-Car lash-up was not uncommon. Martyn Hilbert.

Stepping up at Cleethorpes. A former "Calder Valley" BRCW class 110 DMU (E52084 closest) is seen at Cleethorpes in late 1987 having arrived from Barton-upon-Humber. On the left is a set of steps used to climb aboard from the lower platform level, a far cry from today's step free access requirements everywhere. Murray Liston.

Having left Edale heading towards Manchester and about to plunge into the 2 mile 182 yard Cowburn Tunnel in the Hope Valley on 23rd August 1986, a 1961 built BRC&W built "MetroTrain" branded class 110 'Calder Valley' 3 car dmu set, this one being E52085 + E59696 + E52069, these were not common through here, indeed I'm sure this is the only shot I have of one! The last of the class were taken out of service in October 1989 but by then they were no longer common in the Calder Valley. Andrew J Crowther.
