108 DMU

1974

A Class 108 DMU at Seascale, Cumbria in 1974. These Class 108 power-trailer sets were the mainstay of Cumbrian Coast services for many years, finally replaced in late 1991. Here, in blue livery, with headcode box and carrying a tail lamp, M50956 is seen departing on the rear of a Carlisle-Barrow-in-Furness service. Graeme Phillips Collection.

108 DMU

1988

A two-car Class 108 DMU arrives at Attenborough sometime in 1988. The condition on the DMBS cab front and the unusual sizes/locations of the the warning flashes suggests it is 53956 - presumably with 54238. Andrew Walker.

108 DMU

18th June 1989

53956 and 54238 are seen approaching Seaham station with the SuO 17:15 Newcastle - Middlesbrough on 18/6/89. Graeme Phillips.

108 DMU

16th May 1992

Set: LO296

A Class 108 at Moss Lane Junction, Farington (Ormskirk Line). It was a return to the old order on Preston to Ormskirk services on May 16th 1992, as a Class 108 returned to its former stamping ground due to the non-availability of a Class 142 Pacer. LO296, (53956 + 54238) is seen topping the climb from the WCML at Farington Curve Junction as it approaches the site of the former Moss Lane Junction. To the right of the unit a double track connection ran towards Lostock Hall enabling trains from East Lancashire to access Ormskirk and Liverpool. It was closed in 1972. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

16th May 1992

Set: LO296

With the former Jubilee Mill in the background, Class 108 set LO296 (53956 & 54238) departs from Croston whilst working the 15.08 Ormskirk to Preston on May 16th 1992. Once a familiar sight on these services, this was probably the last visit of a Derby built class 108 to the line. In the intervening years Jubilee Mill has been demolished and a housing development now covers the site. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

16th May 1992

Set: LO296

With Midge Hall in the far distance, a Class 108 two-car DMU formed of cars 53956 & 54238, was passing the Oil Seed Rape at Cocker Bar with the 16.03 Preston to Ormskirk service on May 16th 1992. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

16th May 1992

Set: LO296

Standing-in for a failed Class 142 Pacer, the old order returned to the Ormskirk line for possibly the last time on May 16th 1992. A scabby looking Class 108 formed of cars 53956 & 54238 (LO296) was passing through the long-closed platforms at Midge Hall whilst working the 12.23 Preston to Ormskirk service. Martyn Hilbert.

108 DMU

25th May 1987

A location less often visited by most modern traction photographers in the 1970s and ‘80s was Barrow-in-Furness. On Monday May 25 1987 53957 + 54236 arrive at the station (which was rebuilt after wartime bomb damage) with the 1337 Millom-Lancaster. Mel Holley.

108 DMU

9th February 1990

Believed to be an empty coaching stock (ECS) move, cars E53957 E54236 are captured at Millom (Cumbria) on 9/2/90. These were part of the batch of Class 108s that had long been allocated to Kingmoor (KD) depot, Carlisle, but were transferred to Heaton (HT) depot, Newcastle, upon closure of the former in May 1988. They continued to operate Cumbria services until displaced by Class 153s in 1991. Graeme Phillips Collection.

108 DMU

13th September 1990

A Class 108 set formed of 53957 and 54236 are seen departing (12 minutes late) from Seaham on the 11:03 Middlesbrough - Hexham, 13/6/90. This was one of the majority of Kingmoor (Carlisle - KD) depot's units that were transferred to Heaton (Newcastle - HT) depot in May 1988 when KD closed (the remainder went to Chester - CH), but still intended for use in Cumbria. Thereafter, these power-trailer sets appeared on certain generously timed Newcastle-Carlisle services, presumably as a means of getting to / from their new depot. They also made occasional appearances on other north-east local services, but their inferior power:weight ratio meant they usually struggled to keep time on Pacer schedules, as was probably the case on the service illustrated. Graeme Phillips.

108 DMU

26th June 1991

A 2-car Class 108 DMU arrives at Sellafield on 26th June 1991. In the background 31312 can be seen in the siding with a nuclear flask wagon. Syd Young.

108 DMU

26th June 1991

A dirty E53958 and E54227 are seen awaiting departure from Carlisle with a service to Whitehaven on 26/06/91. A fleet of 2-car power-trailer Class 108 DMUs, allocated to Kingmoor (KD) depot, Carlisle, were the mainstay of Cumbrian Coast services for many years. Upon the closure of that depot in May 1988, most were transferred to Heaton (HT) depot, Newcastle, still intended to continue with Cumbrian services (the rest went to Chester (CH) depot for services in north Lancashire). They lasted until November 1991, when finally replaced by then newly-converted Class 153 single car units. Graeme Phillips Collection.

July 1977

A Class 108 power-trailer set and a Class 105 power twin is seen north east of Brierfield in July 1977. The closest vehicle appears to be M50959, allocated to Carlisle, the right route indicator glass appears to be broken and taped up, the left side is painted yellow. Michael Mensing.

108 DMU

22nd June 1988

53959 + 54243 arrive at Newcastle on 22/06/1988 with a service from the Tyne Valley. This was one of the majority of Class 108s transferred from Kingmoor (KD) depot, Carlisle, to Heaton (HT) depot, Newcastle, in May 1988, upon closure of the former. They were still intended for work in Cumbria, but, being based in the north-east, made frequent appearances in the region, especially certain generously timed Carlisle-Newcastle services, presumably to allow them to come to their home depot for maintenance. They finished working in Cumbria in November 1991, replaced by then newly converted Class 153 single car Sprinters. Graeme Phillips Collection.

50960
