108 DMU

April 1992

Set: B979

Mistimed. Of course in retrospect, I should have waited a couple of moments for these alighting passengers to pass before releasing the shutter. It's evening one day in April 1992, and a first generation dmu (set B979, presumably 54260 + 53931) is about to get away from Bedminster station, Bristol. Most likely this is a service for Weston-super-Mare but the destination blind has not been set. That's my Raleigh "Royal" touring cycle leaning against the lamp post when it was brand new. It's still going strong today, but sadly those panniers, which gave many years of sterling service, do not survive. Tom Harper.

Set: LO262

In the Manchester Victoria of old, a two-car Class 108 formed of cars M51907 & M54490 (Longsight Depot Set LO262) was awaiting departure from platform 11 with a well-filled service to Wigan Wallgate on April 25th 1992. Platform 11 and its extension into the adjacent Manchester Exchange station was once the longest continuous platform in the UK at 2,238 ft (682m) in length. The 108 was another set to have an extended life covering for unreliable second generation units. Martyn Hilbert.

It departs from Wigan Wallgate with the 12:04 Wigan Wallgate-Manchester. The trailer car was notable for still retaining tungsten lighting. Mel Holley.

By this date the first generation DMU's were in the twilight of their careers and the leading vehicle here 53968 was withdrawn two months later on July 2nd with the trailing vehicle 54243 making it to October 1992. Adrian Nicholls.

108 DMU

16th May 1992

Set: LO296

A Class 108 at Moss Lane Junction, Farington (Ormskirk Line). It was a return to the old order on Preston to Ormskirk services on May 16th 1992, as a Class 108 returned to its former stamping ground due to the non-availability of a Class 142 Pacer. LO296, (53956 + 54238) is seen topping the climb from the WCML at Farington Curve Junction as it approaches the site of the former Moss Lane Junction. To the right of the unit a double track connection ran towards Lostock Hall enabling trains from East Lancashire to access Ormskirk and Liverpool. It was closed in 1972. Martyn Hilbert.

Once a familiar sight on these services, this was probably the last visit of a Derby built class 108 to the line. In the intervening years Jubilee Mill has been demolished and a housing development now covers the site. Martyn Hilbert.
