January 1979

With the paraffin tail lamp moved to the cab front of Motor Brake Second M50764, the Cravens Power-Twin prepares to depart from a Wintery Ormskirk with the 09.19 to Preston in January 1979. During this period the Newton Heath based Class 105s were not common on the Ormskirk Line, the Derby built Class 108s were the normal fare. The weather was a total surprise on that day, no snow on leaving Preston, the wintery weather started across Farington Moss and got progressively worse towards Merseyside. Martyn Hilbert.

The Cravens Power-Twins were synonymous with the ex L&Y routes in Lancashire and Greater Manchester from the late 1960's until their demise in the early 1980's. Martyn Hilbert.

27th January 1979

On a bright Winter day, A Cravens Class 105 power-twin with Driving Motor Composite Lavatory M50801 at the rear, was stood at Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on January 27th 1979. On that cold day that Cravens would have no doubt been warm on the inside, complete with its oily/diesel smell aroma. What price now a ride to Colne in first class with a view of the line through the rear cab? Martyn Hilbert.

During the morning of 10th March 1979 a Cravens class 105 unit No.E56139-E50371 eases into March station forming a Peterborough to Cambridge service. How the railway has changed when you look at the platform; Nestle chocolate vending machines, a porter's trolley, even a porter coming out of his office, not to mention flares and long hair. I wonder if that DMU was a 'cop' for the young enthusiast? The favourite vantage point, the road overbridge for looking into Whitemoor Yard, can be seen between the station chimneys. There is also some spoil offloading activity from rail wagons going on adjacent to the GN&GE Joint line platform. Happy days! Gordon Edgar.
