A frosty Henley-in-Arden. The last day of the 1970's, tomorrow would be a new decade, how better to celebrate than an end of the year photograhy session. The outline of the footbridge is etched in the frost as a Metro-Cammell class 101 dmu heads for Birmingham Moor Street with the 12.19 service from Stratford-upon-Avon. Today the scene has changed, the two siding roads under the camera have gone, all traces of mechanical signalling have been swept away, the trackside is a tree tunnel with the houses hidden completely. Geoff Dowling.
Three different liveries - with some less common variations - are displayed between these two Class 101 units at Machynlleth, mid-Wales, around 1980. Nearest the camera, the DMBS while still in blue has nevertheless had the redundant lights / headcodes cleared from its cab front, and also sports the orange/red line across the top of the cab (not on the adjacent refurbished unit), as well as a prominent cantrail stripe along the vehicle length. Behind it, the blue & grey car appears to have an unusually small grey area around the windows, giving the appearance of a Class 108. Graeme Phillips Collection.

A 6-car formation is seen on the Heart of Wales line at Llandrindod Wells on a charter from Lancashire. Date unknown. David Rowe.
A Class 101 2-car unit is seen at Stocksfield on the Tyne Valley route. In spite of the destination reading Hexham, I believe this is heading back eastbound towards Newcastle. This is late 1970s - early 1980s, judging by the condition of the train, in blue livery with inoperative headcode boxes. Graeme Phillips Collection.

On 14/02/1980, a mixed-liveried Class 101 DMU is seen approaching Seaton Carew, south of Hartlepool, with a service for Darlington. In the background is the Newburn Bridge, which remains a useful vantage point for photography, but the sidings and most / all of the buildings visible here in 1980 have gone. Graeme Phillips Collection.
