E50209 + E56408 leads another Met-Camm at calling at the soon to close Gateshead station on October 10, 1981. It was replaced by the underground Metro station several hundred yards away. The old station here would have been much better placed for the regeneration of the riverside area if it had been retained. Unfortunately the slide has evidence of the sticking Zenit-E shutter John Carter.

Westbound departures from Haymarket in Edinburgh were always a good bet for a spirited sprint to Saughton Junction where westbound and Fife bound services diverged. Here, a pair of flat out Met-Camm 101 units working 2C15 1518 Edinburgh to Cowdenbeath (101303 on the left) and 2H57 1517 Edinburgh to Dunblane (set 329 on the right, presumably with 51455 leading) pass Haymarket depot. Class 101 and 303 Milngavie November 1981. The power was off one Sunday so DMUs were working the Milngavie branch. It was unusual to see these here alongside the (now not so) Blue Trains. Alistair Ness.
